After a difficult week on and off the pitch, Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle fully expects a reaction from Crystal Palace when his team visit Selhurst Park on Sunday.Palace are 14th in the Premier League and just one point behind Newcastle, but have endured a difficult few matches, which started with a 5-0 thrashing by rivals Brighton. The Eagles then squandered a lead in their 2-2 draw with Besiktas in the Europa League on Thursday, despite the Turkish giants being reduced to 10 men in the 77th minute. It's a run of results that have seen Pierre Sage's job put at risk, with reports suggesting that the Frenchman potentially has just two more games to prove he is worthy of staying. "There are always times when you would and wouldn't like to play against an opposition. They had a heavy defeat and then drew. They will want a reaction," Jaissle said. "We can only focus on ourselves, what we can control. We are fully focused on Crystal Palace, to deliver the match plan."Newcastle are another team out for a return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa, though they have been given a boost ahead of kick-off. Jaissle revealed that Anthony Elanga could return for Newcastle this weekend, while Jacob Ramsey is also in line to be integrated back into the first-team picture soon. "Anthony has trained this week and worked really hard. He won't be able to play 90 minutes, but he is hopefully ready, at least, to be able to join the squad," Jaissle added. "I am happy Jacob Ramsey is back on the pitch. We need to take it step-by-step with him, manage his load management, we don't want to take too many risks."I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back and the next question is the physical level."Matthias Jaissle on Crystal Palace: "They have had a heavy defeat and then drew yesterday; they will want a reaction. We can only focus on ourselves, what we can control. We are fully focused on Crystal Palace, to deliver the match plan." https://t.co/9Nrr9R5l9d— Newcastle United (@NUFC) October 23, 2026Palace are another side who welcomed back a long-term absentee last week, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring his first goal since returning against Besiktas. Since his debut for the Eagles in February 2021, Mateta has scored 63 goals in all competitions for the club, 26 more than any other player (Eberechi Eze next on 37).The Frenchman could start this Sunday after coming off the bench against Brighton last time out, though Mateta hopes if he scores again, he is on the right side of the result. "I always feel good [when I score], but it's better when we win in the end," Mateta said. "I think we did everything to win the game, and in the end, when you let them have chances, they are a very good team, they scored."But I think we deserved better, we played hard, and we showed a good face, and it's a draw, we take that point."The aggression was back, the team was so strong, and like I said, we let them have two chances and they scored."PLAYERS TO WATCHCrystal Palace – Chris RichardsRichards could make his 100th Premier League appearance in this match. He would be the 14th American (USA) player to reach this milestone, and, at 26 years and 211 days on the day of the game, the second-youngest, after Jonathan Spector in 2010 (23y 359d).Newcastle – Yoane WissaDespite making a promising start to the season, Wissa has scored just one goal from 18 shots in the Premier League this season.Of all players to have found the net at least once, only two have a lower shot conversion rate than Wissa (5.6%).https://t.co/B6z9pobT9y— Newcastle United (@NUFC) October 22, 2026MATCH PREDICTION: CRYSTAL PALACE WINHaving won 2-1 in April in their most recent Premier League clash, Palace are looking for consecutive league wins over Newcastle for the first time since a run of three between August 1971 and September 1972.And after their 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, Palace are also searching for back-to-back Premier League victories at Selhurst Park for the first time since April 2025 (three in a row), with this their 26th home league game since (W6 D11 L8).But Palace have conceded at least twice in 11 of their last 13 Premier League games, with the exceptions being a 0-0 draw with Leeds United and a 3-1 win over Forest. The previous 11 times they’ve conceded at least twice came over a period of 36 matches.Newcastle, meanwhile, have won one of their last 11 away league matches against Palace (D6 L4), winning 2-0 in 2020-21 under Steve Bruce. They have lost 4-1 at Leeds and 4-1 at Coventry City in their last two away league games. They last conceded 4+ goals in three consecutive games on the road in September 1929 (four in a row). And there could be little goalmouth action. Only Palace (-5.4) and Coventry (-4.2) have a lower expected goal difference than Newcastle (-3.95) in the top flight this season (8.15 xG, 12.1 xGA).OPTA WIN PROBABILITYCrystal Palace – 40.6%Draw – 26.6%Newcastle – 32.8%The post Jaissle warns Newcastle that Palace ‘want a reaction’ at Selhurst Park appeared first on SoccerNews.
