Tottenham youngster Luca Gunter has been recalled from his loan spell with National League side Boreham Wood.Tottenham Hotspur have made youth development a clear priority, with the club determined to help their youngsters reach their full potential. In the summer, Spurs underlined that commitment by sending 17 players out on loan to gain valuable experience. Some have impressed immediately, such as Mikey Moore and Yusuf Akhamrich.Moore has established himself as a mainstay in the Köln setup. While he has yet to find the back of the net, his performances have been impressive, backed by encouraging underlying numbers.Akhamrich, on the other hand, has demonstrated his quality in front of goal, scoring three times and providing two assists in 11 appearances for League One side Leyton Orient. However, for others it has not gone to plan – and that is the case for goalkeeper Luca Gunter.Credit: @harryphoto.kr / InstagramTottenham recall Luca Gunter from Boreham Wood loanGunter joined National League side Boreham Wood on loan in the summer and featured heavily early in the season, making 12 appearances. He played every game from August through September, including 11 league matches, and managed to keep two clean sheets. But game time dried up after Chelsea loanee Ted Curd displaced him as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, featuring in the last five matches. With minutes limited, Tottenham have now confirmed Gunter has been recalled from Boreham Wood. The official statement read: “Luca Gunter has been recalled from his loan at National League side Boreham Wood.“The 21-year-old goalkeeper made 12 appearances for the Hertfordshire side, 11 in the National League as they raced to the top of the table.“An England youth international, he has been named as a substitute for our first team in two competitive games to date.”Next steps for Luca Gunter after being recalled from loanTottenham have not yet confirmed their plans for Gunter following his return from Boreham Wood. The 21-year-old could feature for the club’s under-21s in the short term, with another loan move potentially on the cards when the January transfer window opens. For Gunter, the priority has to be regular first-team football, particularly after losing his starting place at Boreham Wood. Another loan would make sense, although Spurs will need to find a club where he has a realistic chance of playing consistently.Breaking into Tottenham’s senior side looks an increasingly difficult task for the young goalkeeper. Antonin Kinsky is currently Roberto De Zerbi’s first-choice option, with Martin Dubravka serving as backup and Brandon Austin also ahead of Gunter in the pecking order. While Gunter has twice been named on the bench for Tottenham’s first team, his long-term future may well lie away from the club. That does not mean he cannot establish himself as a regular goalkeeper at senior level, but another successful loan spell could be important in helping him take that next step.READ MORE: Tottenham must make ‘exceptional offer’ to poach £84m Xavi Espart from BarcelonaThe post Tottenham recall 21-year-old after losing his place on loan appeared first on Spurs Web.
