A 21-year-old Florida woman is facing felony charges after authorities say she struck and killed a scooter rider in Dania Beach, fled the scene, and later brought the heavily damaged vehicle to the luxury car dealership where she worked to get a repair estimate. The suspect, Keila Isabel Maldonado, was taken into custody by Broward County Sheriff’s Office detectives. She faces charges of failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. There was still blood and human tissue smeared across the car According to First for Autos, arrest affidavits from the Broward Sheriff’s Office state that the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17. First responders were called to the 200 block of Sheridan Street near Southeast 2nd Avenue in Dania Beach, where they found an unidentified man lying in the roadway. The victim had been crossing the street on a scooter when he suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Rather than stop to help or call emergency services, Maldonado allegedly drove away. However, she did not get far. Investigators say she pulled her damaged vehicle into a nearby shopping plaza. According to detectives, Maldonado then sat in the car for over an hour, watching the flashing police lights as paramedics arrived to treat the man she had allegedly struck. She eventually left without identifying herself to law enforcement. Maldonado may have thought she had escaped detection, but she left behind physical evidence. Traffic Homicide detectives combed through the crash site and recovered scattered vehicle fragments. One piece of debris had a specific identification number stamped on it, which helped investigators identify the vehicle as a 2025 Hyundai Sonata. Later that morning, around 11:30 a.m., BSO detectives received a tip that the suspect vehicle was parked at the Lexus of North Miami dealership in North Miami Beach. Maldonado worked there. Detectives learned that she had taken the vehicle, which belonged to an Enterprise Car Rental fleet managed through the dealership, the previous day without the business’s knowledge or permission. She had reportedly taken it to a beach in Hollywood. The situation took another turn when Maldonado parked the wrecked sedan on the second floor of the dealership’s parking garage and approached a coworker. She asked the employee to look at the damage to the front of the car and give her a repair estimate. The coworker noticed that the extensive damage, which had destroyed the passenger-side front bumper and shattered the windshield, did not look consistent with a typical multi-car collision. Detectives later noted that what appeared to be blood and human tissue was still smeared across the vehicle. She now must use an ankle monitor When the coworker asked what had happened, Maldonado allegedly admitted that she had hit someone riding a scooter. The employee alerted a supervisor. Maldonado initially panicked and left the premises, but she returned shortly afterward when the manager called her and told her to come back. Maldonado was booked into the Broward County Main Jail. During her initial court appearance, a South Florida judge set her total bond at $51,000. Records indicate that she has since posted bond and been released under strict conditions. While her case is pending, Maldonado must wear a GPS ankle monitor, cannot operate a motor vehicle, and is prohibited from leaving the tri-county area.
