Sioux Nation Filly Tops Arqana Day Two but Torquator Tasso Steals the Show

Wait 5 sec.

DEAUVILLE, FRANCE — It was a day for the young bucks to shine at Arqana. Onesto, Little Big Bear, Erevann and Triple Time, all represented by first-crop yearlings this year, featured among the sires of some of the higher-priced lots as Part II of the October Sale got underway in Deauville. So too did Torquator Tasso, who has his first runners this year, one of which, the dual winner Nakila Sun, is entered for this Saturday's G3 Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury. That colt had been purchased last year at BBAG by Andrew Balding and Richard Venn for just €8,000 but Torquator Tasso's yearlings at Arqana this week have been pretty hot property. Notably, all three catalogued have sold for the same sum of €140,000: a filly and a colt on the first day bought by Wilhelm Feldmann and Alessandro Botti, with trainer Ludovic Gadbin completing the six-figure trio on Wednesday with his purchase of lot 304 from Haras de Montaigu.“This is a colt I saw a month ago at Montaigu. I had already taken a real liking to him, and Erwan from Montaigu also gave me a lot of positive feedback on him. We stayed in touch after that visit,” Gadbin said of the half-brother to Group 2 winner Northern Ruler ( Ruler Of The World).“The colt showed the same behaviour here at the sales: very calm, with a fairly attractive pedigree. There's still a little uncertainty about Torquato Tasso, but the plan would be to wait until the spring of his three-year-old season, which is surely the right approach with this type of colt.”Bred in France by Edward James of Highbourne Stud, the colt is out of the Monsun mare North Sun, whose two other black-type performers include the G1 Preis der Diana third Noble Lips (Gleneagles). He was bought for the partnership of Ecurie Bernd and Torsten Raber. He continued, “We went a little over budget, but he's a colt I really liked. The owners were looking for a horse for the spring of his three-year-old season, ideally one capable of a good race over 2,000 metres, so he ticked the boxes.”A Sioux Nation filly – of course! There haven't been many sales staged this year in which a Sioux Nation filly hasn't been among the top lots and on Wednesday top billing went to a Sioux Nation daughter of the Listed winner and Group 3-placed Les Vertus (Shakespearean), who joined the list of Rabbah purchases when bought by Jaber Abdullah for €190,000. Co-bred and consigned by Haras de Hoguenet, the filly (lot 258) is a half-sister to Ammoony (Zarak), a winner at Redcar this season for Khalifa Dasmal, and who is set to run at Newbury on Friday. By the end of the second session, Rabbah had added another five yearlings to their Arqana haul, signing for 14 in total throughout the first two days for €1,805,000.A different Thunder making a noiseHaras de Castillon's Thunder Moon is a stallion gaining traction in France with four black-type earners among his first-crop runners this year, including the Listed winner Sydney Moon, who is trained by Amy Murphy. A colt by the Group 1-winning son of Zoffany caught the attention of Neil Helliwell of Prime Equestrian, who bid €150,000 for lot 326. Helliwell, the owner of Haras du Mont Dit Mont admitted that he had arrived at Arqana with the intention of buying only a handful of horses but, out of solidarity for his fellow breeders, has ended up being busy this week, so far signing for 22 yearlings for a total of €1,469,000. “I felt sorry for the breeders,” he said. “I know what it's like to be in that position.”Helliwell's purchases included Haras de Bourgeauville's Thunder Moon colt out of Qalansia (Giant's Causeway), whose last three offspring have all been by that same stallion and include the yearling's full-brother Gelden Grey, who was third on debut at Chantilly in September. Thunder Moon, whose 2026 fee was €5,000, has had just two yearlings go through the ring so far at Arqana, both of which have sold, and he has another six to follow over the next two sessions.Gezora's relation for Qatar Racing Sheikh Fahad has made a welcome return to the European yearling market of late and through David Redvers and Hannah Wall, he picked up a first-crop daughter of G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Onesto (lot 204) to race in France,“Sheikh Fahad had very much liked this filly and very much liked her pedigree as well,” said Wall. “We had all been quite impressed by Onesto's first yearlings so we were very happy to get her.”That pedigree is indeed enticing as the filly, who was bred and consigned by Haras d'Etreham, is out of the once-placed Galway (Wootton Bassett), who is a three-parts sister to the G1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Gezora (Almanzor), their dam Germance (Silver Hawk) having also been a Group 1 winner.Etreham not only bred Gezora but also her sire, and the farm is now home to Onesto, whose eight yearlings sold so far at Arqana October have returned an average of €69,750.Big result for CouloncesAnna and Moa Sundstrom of Coulonces were in action early in the session when offering lot 201, a homebred filly by Little Big Bear, who was bought by Paul Nataf at €105,000.The colt is the first foal of the Olympic Glory mare Freaky Friday, who won in the colours of Anna Sundstrom when trained by Tim Donworth and had been bought by her owner as a foal for €4,000. Though she is herself out of a non-winner, Freaky Friday's granddam is the Lupe Stakes winner Fragrant Hill, the dam of Group 1 winners Fragrant Mix and Alpine Rose. Little Big Bear, who was a graduate of the Arqana August Yearling Sale, has had five yearlings sold this week in France for an average price of €102,600.Erevann another popular freshmanDavid Menuisier has done well with horses bought at this sale in the past, including this season's Irish Oaks runner-up Inis Mor (Galiway), who was bought in October 2024 for €72,000 by Jeremy Brummitt and Quantum Leap Racing and will return to sale ring, albeit at Tattersalls, for the Sceptre Sessions at the December Mares Sale. Her trainer was among those to place their faith in a first-crop yearling by the Aga Khan Studs' Erevann, who will be relocating from France to Gilltown Stud in Ireland for the 2027 covering season. Menuisier went to €90,000 for lot 202, the colt out of the Listed-placed Frenchette (The Gurkha), who was consigned by Haras de Thenney and co-bred by the stud's owner David Salabi.Ghislain Bozo of Meridian International was another to sign for an Erevann yearling during the second session, going to €80,000 for lot 233, Windermere Stud's filly out of a half-sister to Group 3 winners Zabeel Light and Hargeisa.Dasmal enhances his team for 2027Classic-winning owner Khalifa Dasmal has been in attendance at Arqana this week and picked up four yearlings through agent Federico Barberini. After signing for fillies by Zelzal and Nathaniel on Tuesday, Barberini also picked up Haras de Colleville's Hello Youmzain filly out of Kendiss (Kendargent) for €85,000.“She's for Khalifa Dasmal, who loved the filly himself,” he said of lot 244, whose dam is a full-sister to the Listed winners Surrey Mist and Kendly. “I think Hello Youmzain can get you a racehorse. They are probably more affordable than a few years ago but he's a stallion I have been buying through the years and I think he is definitely worth a chance.”Barberini added his thoughts on the market at Arqana. He said. “I think it is solid. Obviously this is Part II, so there are horses and pedigrees for different budgets compared to the first day, but I think when a nice horse comes in the ring you are never on your own. There is always someone else who likes it.”Solid had also been the word used by Henri Bozo of Ecurie des Monceaux, which sold all 21 yearlings offered through Part I to be leading vendor once more at Arqana. Delivering his assessment of the trade,  he said, “We sold everything and there was demand at every level. We got some solid prices – there were no fireworks but they were solid prices, and that is what counts for everyone. We were very busy through all the days of inspections so we were very confident when the sale started and it went well.”With the clearance rate remaining at 80% through the second session, a total of 110 yearlings were marked as sold on Wednesday for turnover of €4,234,500 at an average of €38,314 and median of €31,000.Thought for the dayPatrik Olave moved his stable from Madrid to Pau in 2025 and has made his mark this season with Group winners My Calyx Cen and Sir Tommy Cen among his growing team. We can expect to hear more of the Spanish trainer in the coming years as his stable has been further enhanced by some horses being moved to him from the recently retired Jean-Claude Rouget. Olave's three purchases at Arqana this week include a first-crop son of Triple Time from the family of recent G1 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes winner Survie (Churchill). Sold as lot 215 by Haras de la Louviere, he was bought for €65,000.Part II of the October Sale continues on Thursday from 1pm local time. The post Sioux Nation Filly Tops Arqana Day Two but Torquator Tasso Steals the Show appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
