Ghana has called for a more representative, responsive and effective United Nations (UN), urging reforms to ensure Africa’s priorities are better reflected in global decision-making.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the call in a press statement ahead of the 81st anniversary of UN Day, which will be commemorated on Saturday, October 24, 2026, under the theme: “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for Africa.”The statement said the anniversary offered an opportunity to renew international cooperation as the world faces conflicts, inequality, climate change, economic pressures, displacement and rapid technological transformation. It also highlighted the UN’s role in promoting peace, sustainable development and international cooperation, particularly in addressing the needs and aspirations of African countries.Ghana’s position, according to the ministry, aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s call for a more equitable international order that reflects the realities of the 21st century. It cited his advocacy for meaningful African representation in global decision-making, particularly at the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where he criticised Africa’s lack of permanent representation on the UN Security Council despite being the largest regional voting bloc in the General Assembly.Ghana pushes financial and economic reformsThe statement also called for reforms to the international financial architecture to make financing more affordable for developing countries. It identified climate justice, greater value addition to Africa’s natural resources, industrialisation and job creation as priorities for achieving inclusive economic transformation across the continent.Ghana further stressed that restoring confidence in multilateralism required accountability and good governance at all levels. It said development and democratic governance must translate into tangible improvements in people’s lives, including better access to healthcare, education, economic opportunities and social protection.Focus on youth and digital transformationThe UN Day commemoration is expected to highlight collaboration among the UN, the Ghanaian government, civil society, the private sector, young people and other stakeholders to translate international commitments into practical solutions and measurable results.Particular attention will be given to Africa’s youthful population, natural resources, digital transformation, innovation and regional integration as key factors shaping the continent’s future.Ghana reaffirmed the importance of a strong and effective multilateral system that promotes peace and security, climate change mitigation, human rights protection and inclusive opportunities for all.The ministry stressed that a United Nations that serves Africa must listen to the continent, reflect its priorities in global decision-making and support partnerships that deliver meaningful outcomes for its people. As the world marks the anniversary, Ghana has called for renewed commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and collective action towards building a fairer, more inclusive and responsive international order. It added that the effectiveness of the UN must be demonstrated through concrete action and measurable improvements in the lives of people in Ghana, across Africa and around the world.
