why are so many people against the “graduates marry graduates” mindset proposed by late prime minister Lee Kuan Yew?

disclaimer : this is from a fairly narrow perspective since i am not getting married anytime soon and based purely of what ive read. please forgive me for any contradictions i make and please do give your views on this matter in a respectful way thank u. Besides this, please forgive me for my narrow-mindedness, i am looking to improve and expand my perspective so i can become more empathetic and understanding towards our society. if this has offended you or you think i lack empathy, i am very very sorry. Starting off with the full quote, “If you don't include your women graduates in your breeding pool and leave them on the shelf, you would end up a more stupid society… So what happens? There will be less bright people to support dumb people in the next generation.” I feel that this is true. As i observe my classmates, i come to think of it.. what will our society become if there are no more bright minds? The more i think about it the more true it gets. If 2 graduates marry (lets factor out genetics since i am not knowledgeable in that field) and a child is born,, these graduates earn more than someone who did not graduate. When there is a higher household income, the child is able to have more enrichment and a better standard of living. The child is also able to access luxuries like tution, enrichment classes, helper so they do not have to spend time on chores. All these factors lead to more time spent relaxing or studying leading to less academic pressure on the child’s part. “At its best, tuition can provide personalised support, stronger academic structure, and renewed confidence for students who are struggling or feeling lost in school” (source : https://msnglearningacademy.com.sg/pros-and-cons-of-tuition-in-singapore-an-honest-guide-for-parents/) . When the child is born into a well educated family, the child is put into an environment where he/she can learn freely without worrying about the financial state of the household. While those from less fortunate families will likely have a harder time on the road to success. “those from lower-income households are seen to b likely to be seen as vulnerable and less likely to flourish, compared with their more affluent peers.” (sourced from : https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/parenting-education/some-flourish-while-others-struggle-nie-study-finds-five-different-paths-of-lower-income-students) Besides this, politically engaged and highly educated parents can buffer their children against the political disengagement associated with poverty which increases political literacy, ensuring said children are able to make a valuable vote that betters society. “The study found that respondents who expressed higher levels of interest in politics were more likely to be male, better educated, or more affluent.” Sourced from a study conducted by Institute of Policy Studies, article was published on 24 March 2021. (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/most-sporeans-arent-interested-in-politics-feel-strongly-about-some-policy-issues-ips-study-5649596). This helps create a more literate future generation to ensure the continuity of Singapore’s economic and social prosperity. Following that, this future generation will reproduce with each other, continuing the cycle and almost guarantees Singapore will continue to prosper economically and socially. Of course this assumes that the children from these affluent families continue to work hard in the future towards their aspirations. Now my question is, why are so many people against this mindset? Also, if singaporeans adapt this mindset, what will happen to the people labeled, “stupid”? submitted by /u/KaleidoscopeFun9399 to r/asksg [link] [comments]
