Oxbridge grad leaving GoStudent over punitive trial fees & platform glitches—how do you handle underpaying platforms?

Wait 5 sec.

Hey everyone, Looking to vent a bit and get some perspective/advice from fellow UK tutors. I’ve been tutoring on GoStudent for a while, and over the summer, it was basically my main source of income to cover rent when my other avenues dried up. But recently, I’ve hit a complete breaking point with their policies and support. They regularly book unpaid trial sessions onto my calendar without consulting me first. If you can’t make a trial, they charge/fine you. The app/site is so glitchy that on multiple occasions, I literally could not cancel or amend the trial sessions within the system. I repeatedly asked support how to remove my availability for trial sessions entirely, only to be ignored or spoken to disrespectfully. I’m an Oxbridge graduate, and sitting there realising I was stressing out over a platform paying £13.50/hr (and an insulting £6 for no-shows) while actively getting fined due to their own software errors made me realise enough is enough. I finally sent in my formal resignation today, laid out all the evidence of their glitches and unanswered tickets, and resigned. Now that the adrenaline has worn off, I'm feeling really stressed. Luckily, I have work lined up across three other platforms now, but coming from a background of lifelong financial stress, stepping away from any platform always triggers that "what if I need them later?" panic. A few questions for the community: Has anyone else dealt with GoStudent trying to withhold pay or levy unfair fines upon leaving? How did you ensure you got paid? Did I do the right thing here or just burn a bridge when I am already broke.. For UK tutors (especially Oxbridge/Russell Group grads), what high-tier agencies or direct client platforms (£35–£60+/hr) have you had the best experience with? Thanks for listening—would appreciate any reassurance or advice from anyone who’s made the leap away from low-paying gig platforms! submitted by /u/Tall-Primary-8276 [link] [comments]
