Dave Portnoy has blasted his New England Patriots after their 13-10 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in the 2026 NFL season opener. There was a lot of optimism surrounding the Patriots entering the 2026 campaign. It was a bad night for the Patriots in the 2026 season openergettyAfter all, they had the MVP runner-up from last season in quarterback Drake Maye, and they had reached the Super Bowl LX – albeit being dismantled by the Seahawks on that occasion – without an out-and-out star wide receiver. But in the NFL offseason, they addressed that by adding three-time All-Pro A.J. Brown in a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, reuniting him with his former coach Mike Vrabel. However, in his debut for the team he went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter, and was later seen exiting the locker room with a boot on. Maye’s first outing of the season also left little to be desired, as he completed 23-of-33 passing for 178 yards and a touchdown, whilst also firing three interceptions and being sacked three times by the Seahawks defense. To add insult to injury, the Seahawks were also forced to deploy backup quarterback Drew Lock after Sam Darnold left the game with a hip injury early on in the first quarter of the contest, and would not return. It was a game to forget for Vrabel and co, and for the fans, with Patriots super fan Dave Portnoy taking to social media platform X to voice his thoughts on what he watched. “It’s only the first game of the season, but that was tough to watch,” the Barstool Sports founder said in his online rant. “Horrible game from Drake. That last throw – disgusting. “We lost A.J. Brown with what I’ll guess will be a pretty severe injury. The other new guy Doubs has a disgusting drop. “Play-calling sucked most of the night. I thought on offense the game was right there for the taking. “Obviously it’s only Week 1, but that was a sh**** way to start the season… that was F-minus sh**. Brown suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter an would not returnGettyPortnoy was critical of his team’s performance, grading it an F-GettyHopes quickly dashed after Maye lost composureThese comments were quite the change of tune with Portnoy having previously posted to his 3.8 million X followers that he felt his team could go undefeated in 2026. “Its early but 17-0 isnt out of the question,” he wrote. Although he was wrong in the end, with the Patriots now 0-1 already, the Patriots were in a position to win the game. Having converted a fourth-and-9 to put themselves inside field goal range with less than a minute to play, Maye was hoping that it was third-time lucky with his previous two fourth-quarter drives ending in interceptions. But with 25 seconds remaining and on a 3rd & 5 from the 16-yard line, the third-year pro lacked composure, under-throwing his receiver with the ball landing straight into the hands of cornerback Josh Jobe for the toe tap interception. This play ultimately ended New England’s chances of sending the game to overtime with a made field goal. Nonetheless, in football you’ve got to have a short memory, and the Patriots have more time than usual to prepare for Week 2 due to the Wednesday start, with them next taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers at Gillette Stadium on September 20.Join talkSPORT’s dedicated US Sports YouTube channel The S* Word every Tuesday and Thursday for our brand new NFL shows. On Tuesdays, Will Gavin and US senior reporter Brian T.
