If races at Saratoga and Del Mar last Saturday respectively identified the leading juvenile filly on either coast, they also measured a corresponding span of opportunity in the broodmare market. On the one hand, Mike Slezak found a tremendous bargain when acquiring the dam of GI Del Mar Debutante winner Miss Monica (Early Voting) for $4,000 at the Fasig-Tipton February Sale. But the performance of Summer Starlet (City of Light) in the GI Spinaway Stakes showed that steeper investments can prove barely less rewarding.Summer Starlet was herself part of the package, in utero, when Avenue Bloodstock gave $610,000 for her 9-year-old dam Act Now (Street Sense) at the 2024 Keeneland November Sale. That represented a significant increase on the $150,000 she had realized in the same ring, with a maiden cover by Kitten's Joy, at the 2020 January Sale. The colt she delivered a few weeks later would give her a decent start, winning maiden and allowance before placing in a couple of turf sprint stakes. But it was the first mating chosen by her new owners, with Quality Road, that really transformed the profile of Act Now, who had won on debut before regressing through a light career. For their son made $1.7 million as a Keeneland September yearling and, as Coach Prime, looked worth every cent when breaking his maiden by seven lengths at Del Mar.Timing is everything in this game. Coach Prime produced that monster performance on Nov. 10, 2023. Act Now entered the ring just three days later, and made almost four times as much as the next most expensive mare in the auction's sixth session. Unfortunately, Coach Prime promptly abandoned the script, only third of five when odds-on for the GII Los Alamitos Futurity the following month, and never seen again.The mare's purchasers must have felt somewhat deflated, at that point. But at least the City of Light filly she had been carrying at the sale turned out to be nice enough to bring $335,000 from BC Stables at the 2025 September Sale.And now everything has come up roses. Anointed a 'TDN Rising Star presented by Hagyard' on debut, Summer Starlet has now confirmed why with another emphatic success in the Spinaway.The fact is that Newstead Corp, in picking this mare, will hardly have been depending solely on Coach Prime. For Act Now not only extends one of the very best families around, but does so with the help of some optimal seeding.Lately, we've been talking a fair bit about the faith a lot of people have in nicks, whereas some of us prioritize family, overall, and also strong distaff brands. But Act Now would have pleased either camp.Act Now certainly represents a resonant formula, in being by Street Sense out of a Bernardini mare. (His Darley neighbor has contributed considerably to Bernardini's reputation as a broodmare sire, notably through Maxfield and Speaker's Corner). But anyone could treasure both those names simply as eligible for such an aristocratic line. Because the unraced Bernardini mare who produced Act One, Always Trouble, is a granddaughter of none other than Yarn (Mr. Prospector)–who shared with her sister Preach, not least in their famous combination behind Justify, in making their dam Narrate (Honest Pleasure) one of the great Claiborne matriarchs.This branch of the Narrate dynasty goes through Yarn's stakes-winning daughter by Wild Again, Spunoutacontrol, herself a half-sister to elite performers either side of the water in Minardi (Boundary) and Tale of the Cat (Storm Cat).Spunoutacontrol produced not only that fast horse Fed Biz, but also Spun Silk (A.P. Indy), the stakes-winning dam of GI Vosburgh scorer Joking (Distorted Humor), and granddam (through a Street Sense mare, incidentally) of multiple graded stakes winner Red Carpet Ready (Oscar Performance).In other words, City of Light has tapped into a very rich seam to produce his third Grade I winner–something of a relief after the first two, champion Fierceness and turf stalwart Formidable Man, both emerged from his second crop. The next two crops have yielded a solitary graded stakes winner in Mentee. But his own template, as a horse that thrived with maturity, suggests that City of Light may yet eke further dividends from the upgrading of his mares after his early commercial success. The crops conceived at a peak fee of $60,000 are now sophomores and juveniles respectively, so Summer Starlet may yet be followed by further reinforcements.A Good Early ImpressionMiss Monica's success in California consolidated a fine start for Early Voting, while next day a parallel Grade I breakout followed for another freshman when The Good Life won the Hopeful Stakes for Life Is Good.Both had already made a flying start. Early Voting proved aptly named when no fewer than four of his first seven winners were named 'TDN Rising Stars presented by Hagyard.' Unluckily for him, Life Is Good had just a week previously become the fastest stallion ever to that tally.As we often remark, the only thing as ridiculous as the stampede to new stallions is the haste with which they are then abandoned. As a result, they face exorbitant pressure to make their big opportunity count. If they don't capitalize on what generally prove the biggest and best books of their careers, then the fleeting window of opportunity will slam shut.With so many juvenile stakes staged later in the year, it's a little early to judge how the current lot will stack up. But they have already distanced themselves from the historic embarrassment of the preceding intake, who mustered a solitary Grade III between them last year. That we should not make premature judgement is plain, however, in the fact that these have meanwhile assembled 17 graded stakes winners from their maturing sophomores.Miss Monica | BenoitThe latest intake is certainly making its early shots count. Early Voting's first stakes success has come in a Grade I, and Life Is Good's second. It was also a fertile weekend for Flightline, for whom the stakes are obviously highest of all, with a group winner in Japan; and Mandaloun, who notched his first graded stakes through Observed in the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf and also had emphatic maiden winner Rum Twist at Saratoga.The homebred Observed represents one of Juddmonte's great European families. His unraced dam Overseen (First Defence) is out of Jibe, a Group 1-placed sibling by the great Danzig to serial elite performers out of the blue hen Slightly Dangerous (Roberto). Rum Twist, for her part, maintained a hot streak for Congrats as a broodmare sire, further extended by the 'TDN Rising Star presented by Hagyard' debut of Pharocity (American Pharoah).That streak was highlighted the previous weekend by Leading Change (Gun Runner) in the GI Travers Stakes, a race that now also bookends a tremendous end to the Spa meet for The Good Life's breeders (and co-owners) at WinStar. Life Is Good looks an exciting new force in the fierce competition between sons of Into Mischief–not that the champion is going anywhere just yet.In trying to claw back Not This Time's lead, in the general sires' table, Into Mischief now has a sixth Grade I scorer of the year. Del Mar Futurity winner Hughes brings him to a peak scaled only once during his reign, in 2023.Tiz Another Big DaddyReturning to Yarn, it was the mating of her sister Preach with A.P. Indy that crucially produced Pulpit, whose son Tapit is presiding over a welcome invigoration of competition between his own heirs. For a great stallion, he has seen quite a few sons disappoint in trying to take his legacy forward. But he obviously still has young guns like Flightline and Essential Quality, while the emergence of Tiz the Law meanwhile confirms the six-figure cover Constitution, for now at least, as the key link in the chain.It was hard to know how Tiz the Law could conceivably live up to a book of 274 mares last year, the biggest in the land; while those wary about the effect of sheer volume on stallions will not be forgetting that he has additionally performed shuttle service to Chile. As things stand, however, it is precisely his Chilean crops who are wildly corroborating the auspicious impression being made by his first domestic crops. Last weekend, three local Group 1 winners in consecutive days complemented the GI Personal Ensign Stakes success of Fully Subscribed. (One of that trio, incidentally, was actually followed by six other sons of Tiz the Law among the next seven home). Then, on Saturday, came another Group 1 winner in Chile, a fourth in nine days–and once again there were home comforts, too. Caroline St. Beat won the GII Nashville Derby Invitational; Dixie Law landed a fourth stakes prize at Woodbine; and Preside, having posted a 96 Beyer in his maiden, again looked one of the better late-blooming sophomores in a Saratoga allowance.Caroline St Beat | Coady MediaTiz the Law's deluge exceeds even the way Scat Daddy once seized his opportunities in Chile. As it happens, three of his six elite scorers there are out of Scat Daddy mares, while a fourth can thank the same, lamented sire for a granddam.
