There was much fanfare when Tanguy Ndombele arrived in N17 as Tottenham Hotspur’s club record signing in 2019, and rightly so. But what has the Spurs flop been up to since he left North London?Nobody would have really expected it would have then ended in a mutual termination of a contract around five years later, with Ndombele undoubtedly tremendously gifted, but never taking the Premier League by the scruff of its neck and delivering on his full potential.Is it fair to say he was a flop?“He’s a great player with great talent,” Jose Mourinho once said. “He has to know he has to do much better and know I cannot keep giving him opportunities to play because the team is much more important.” His last two and a half seasons before he was shipped out on a series of loans: first to Lyon, then Napoli, followed by Galatasaray, before that parting of the ways. So, where is he now? After struggling with Spurs, this was his chance to get back on track. He reportedly rejected big offers from clubs across Europe, as well as Saudi Arabia, and even took a pay cut to return to Ligue 1.“I wanted to come back to France, where I feel more at ease, and I am also at a stage in my career where I want to play more,” Ndombele said, after signing a two-year deal.When things started, it was all pretty good. Ndombele was a regular through the first half of the season, earning rave reviews, especially when being the metronome behind a thumping 8-0 win over Saint-Étienne.“What I see from his matches, I think in terms of confidence, it is going pretty well,” reflected his coach, Frank Haise. “Little by little, we are rediscovering the player that we knew a few years ago,” said his sporting director, Florian Maurice. But then, disaster. A sports hernia issue ended his season, and surgery followed over the summer, before he returned to action in the 2025/26 season. He made a total of 13 appearances, playing 618 minutes of football – roughly 47 minutes per match. It was fragmented, and all his wishes of wanting to ‘play more’ had clearly not come to pass.For all the positivity of his start, his time with Nice was hampered by injuries and ultimately came to an end in the summer of 2026 when his contract ran out. That means Tanguy Ndombele is now a free agent once more. So, what next?A switch to Roberto De Zerbi’s old club?Reports have touted Ndombele with a move to Roberto De Zerbi‘s former club, Marseille. French TV pundit Walid Acherchour claimed that Marseille had reached agreements with a number of players, including Ndombele, but there are some obstacles…Forced to make a number of cutbacks, Marseille were something of an anomaly in the summer transfer window. They didn’t sign a single player. Their coach, Bruno Genesio, has been left with a small squad, admitting before the transfer window closed that they did need reinforcements, “But when you can’t, you can’t.”Any incomings were contingent on departures, and how easy that is to do now, with the window shut, suggests Ndombele may have to bide his time for his next move. It’s a shame, in a way, as Marseille would have marked a reunion with Genesio, who was his coach during his time with Lyon.Acherchour said that Genesio still rates Ndombele highly. “He’s a midfielder [he] really likes,” he began. “But in terms of physicality and athleticism, they aren’t exactly top-tier signings. Physically, these are guys who need to be nursed back to fitness.”That is perhaps Ndombele’s biggest issue going forward. If it does end up being Marseille or it’s somewhere else, he’s had two injury-ravaged seasons and has everything to prove. The talent is there. It always has been. But whether it’s been his mind or his body, things have never quite clicked for the Frenchman.He’s 29, now. He’ll turn 30 in December.
