The Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta (FELTOM) has spoken out following concerns surrounding EC English Malta and students who had been due to travel to its schools this weekend.FELTOM said it was aware of the communication circulated by EC English to its international agents on 10th September, which asked agents to prevent affected students from travelling over the coming weekend.The organisation said it is now working closely with EC English Malta, the ELT Council, member schools and other stakeholders to understand the situation, with students’ interests and wellbeing at the centre of discussions.FELTOM added that its member schools have shown a “strong willingness to cooperate and support where needed”, stressing that “Malta’s ELT sector continues to fare well” despite the uncertainty surrounding EC English.“Malta has a strong network of licensed English language schools, and FELTOM remains confident in the resilience of the sector and its ability to work collectively when challenges arise,” it said.However, FELTOM stressed that discussions remain ongoing and said it does not want to speculate or provide information which has not been officially confirmed. Students, agents and partners have meanwhile been urged to rely on official communications as the situation develops.The statement comes after EC English informed booking agents that it would be unable to accept new student arrivals at its schools this weekend, warning affected students not to begin their journeys on the basis of their existing bookings.•
