President John Mahama has assured residents of the Upper West Region that the Wa-Bolgatanga road will be completed before the end of 2027.The President gave the assurance after inspecting ongoing works on the road as part of his two-day Resetting Ghana tour of the Upper West Region.He said the road was among the key routes prioritised under the government’s Big Push Programme because it connects two regional capitals.“It’s a very important road. Indeed, it’s been in very poor condition since our father’s time,” President Mahama said.He said works had progressed to the point where residents should expect a significantly improved journey between Wa and Bolgatanga by the end of 2027.“I believe that today we can see that in just some months, that is before the end of 2027, we’ll have a very comfortable ride between the two regional capitals,” he said.President Mahama said the road would initially undergo double surface dressing before being fully sealed with asphalt.He said the approach was intended to improve the road’s durability and reduce the need for frequent maintenance.“After we do the double surface dressing, we will then seal the whole road with asphalt from Wa to Bolga, so that at least we know that for the next 20 years the road will last and will require just very little maintenance,” he said.He expressed confidence in the contractor working on the project, describing the company as one of Ghana’s oldest construction firms with experience on road projects in the Upper West Region.The President said government was already identifying projects for the second phase of the Big Push Programme, with a third phase also planned.He explained that government could not undertake all road projects simultaneously because of budgetary constraints.The strategy, he said, was to prioritise major trunk roads before moving to feeder roads that connect communities and towns to the main routes.“Everybody thinks that we can do all their roads at once. We cannot do that. There’s a limit to the budget that we have,” he said.President Mahama said completing the trunk roads would allow residents from different constituencies to connect to major routes before the government gradually expands the programme to feeder roads.He said he expected to return to the region next year to commission the completed road.
