Tooro King-designate Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has outlined an ambitious agenda focused on unity, education, scholarships and partnerships as he prepares to take on the leadership of the kingdom.Kijanangoma made the remarks in his first address to a select group of elders after emerging as the choice of the Babiito elders for the Tooro throne.He said he was ready to serve the people of Tooro and build on the projects started by the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, while introducing new programmes aimed at improving education and development.Kijanangoma acknowledged that he was not the first choice for the throne, explaining that Prince George Desmond Kamurasi had initially been approached but declined the role.I was not the first choice, but when the committee reached out to Prince Kamurasi, he said he was not able to take on the role, for his reasons.There was some pushing and shoving, and the baton came to me. I think this was God’s doing, not me.He also acknowledged the disagreements and tension that surrounded King Oyo’s passing, burial and the succession process.Kijanangoma called on the people of Tooro to put the divisions behind them, turn to God and work towards unity.People have fought and done a lot, but God was involved. Even today during the burial of the king, you heard what transpired, but all I can say is that it all ended well.He pointed to the Buganda Kingdom as an example of what unity can achieve, saying Tooro could also reach greater heights if its people remained united.We often hear about the great things that have been accomplished by the Buganda Kingdom; they are united. All his great projects will not stop because he is not here. We shall take them on and develop them.On education, the King-designate said his administration would seek partnerships both within Uganda and abroad to create more opportunities for young people in Tooro.We shall sit and look for partners in Uganda and outside so that Batooro can benefit from those projects.He also pledged to expand scholarship opportunities, noting that King Oyo had already initiated scholarship programmes.We shall find some scholarships. I assure you we have people who can support us.I know that the late king had some scholarship projects, but we shall add more.
