A major new €47 million Sustainable Living Complex is taking shape at the University of Malta, with Prime Minister Robert Abela visiting the ongoing works at the site.The EU co-funded project will cover 27,000 square metres and is being developed as a major academic and research centre where sustainable and energy-efficient technologies can be tested. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)The complex will incorporate four main buildings, which will house the Faculty for the Built Environment and the Faculty of Education, together with their associated institutes and centres.Project lead Professor Alex Torpiano explained that the buildings will include lecture spaces and laboratories, while underground facilities will feature state-of-the-art equipment including a flight simulator, seismic simulation equipment and a wave tank.Abela described the project as a “living laboratory”, saying its sustainability focus goes beyond energy efficiency to include the efficient use of water, waste and other resources.The buildings will feature monitoring systems measuring energy generation and consumption, air quality, water use and recycling, while technologies including photovoltaic systems, solar panels, heat pumps and greywater collection will also be tested at the complex.“Once this campus comes to life, various technologies that are important for today and especially for the future will be tested, in the face of global challenges such as climate change,” Abela said.The Prime Minister said the project will make a difference on two fronts, by providing students with a high-quality learning experience while helping Malta research and invest in more efficient solutions for the future.Abela was joined during the visit by Education and Sport Minister Byron Camilleri, European Funds Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti, University Rector Professor Frank Bezzina and Pro-Rector Professor Vincent Cassar.•
