Matthew Caruana Galizia has called for Malta’s justice system to address its shortcomings following the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech in the murder of his mother, journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.Speaking at a PACE hearing in Paris today, Matthew said his family had hoped Fenech’s conviction would represent another step towards justice after years of investigations, legal proceedings and reforms.Instead, Fenech was acquitted on all charges relating to the assassination, a verdict Matthew described as shocking for his family and for the country.Matthew, who was 31 when his mother was assassinated, recalled being at home with her shortly before she left in her car.He said he subsequently found himself standing in front of the burning vehicle, with parts of his mother’s body scattered on the ground.“Since then I haven’t had a single moment of peace,” he said.Matthew said the family is now doing everything possible to secure a retrial, stressing that any new proceedings must be conducted properly.He said Daphne’s assassination and the subsequent pursuit of justice had exposed a series of problems within Malta’s systems. Some of these were subsequently addressed through structural reforms promoted by the Council of Europe and endorsed by the Maltese government.However, he said the latest verdict has exposed another major issue: the country’s justice and jury systems.“This is the next problem that we have to overcome,” Matthew said, arguing that Malta must ensure there is no repeat failure to convict the person responsible.He also rejected suggestions that the acquittal means authorities should simply restart the investigation and look for someone else responsible for the assassination.Matthew maintained that the focus should instead be on ensuring the justice system properly deals with the case and prevents what he described as another failure to convict.Matthew also called for the proceedings to be protected from interference and disinformation campaigns that could influence the outcome of future proceedings.He said the government must give the prosecution its full backing in pursuing justice against the person he believes is responsible for his mother’s murder.The hearing comes days after Fenech was acquitted of all charges related to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.What do you make of this?Credit: PACE TV•
