It’s looking increasingly likely that we’ll see a different version of Ron Weasley in HBO’s Harry Potter reboot.While plenty of fans love Rupert Grint’s funny, warm performance in the original Harry Potter films, others argue that the series shortchanged Ron. His book counterpart is more strategic, fiercely loyal, and often the source of key wizarding knowledge, while the movies hand several of his best moments to Hermione and lean harder into making him the group’s comic relief.Credit: HBOHowever, it looks like HBO’s reboot is making some changes to rectify this mistake when Alastair Stout takes over the role.‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Promises Book-Accurate Ron WeasleyWhile we’re still three months out from the first episode of HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, early footage suggests a slightly different take on Ron Weasley.The most recent trailer leans straight into one of Ron’s defining insecurities: feeling invisible in his own family. His Hogwarts letter sits forgotten on the table while his brothers mess around and Molly (Katherine Parkinson) fusses over Percy (Ruari Spooner) becoming a Prefect, immediately establishing why Ron is so desperate to distinguish himself.We also see Ron enthusiastically supporting Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) during a Quidditch match, complete with a bloody nose. That appears to nod directly to the novel, where Ron gets into a fight with Draco Malfoy (Lox Pratt) after the Slytherin mocks Harry during the match.Then there’s the troll. Rather than framing Ron as the frightened third member of the trio, the footage shows him actively facing the creature alongside Harry and Hermione (Arabella Stanton). Having grown up in a magical family, book Ron regularly explains customs, prejudices, and everyday magical life to Harry and Hermione. The films frequently transfer that explanatory role to Hermione (Emma Watson), making her look more knowledgeable while leaving Ron with considerably less to contribute.The most infamous example comes in Prisoner of Azkaban. In the novel, an injured Ron stands between Harry and Sirius Black and declares that Sirius will have to kill them too. Book Ron is frightened plenty of times — spiders remain an obvious example — but he repeatedly acts despite that fear. He sacrifices himself during the giant chess match, enters the Forbidden Forest, confronts danger for Harry, and routinely throws himself into situations he knows could end badly.His relationship with Hermione suffers from the same compression. The books give Ron sharper instincts, more emotional complexity, and plenty of moments where he challenges or supports her.
