Arsenal have beaten their closest and most dreaded foes, Tottenham Hotspur, more times than they’ve lost to them. However, there’s one game which stands out in particular in history.On 6th March 1935, the Gunners annihilated their North London rivals 6-0 at the old White Hart Lane while sitting comfortably top of the old First Division, showcasing one of Arsenal’s greatest teams to date.The man who steered that team to victory was George Allison, who took over from the legendary Herbert Chapman. Chapman gave Arsenal their distinctive white sleeves and helped make the Gunners the club they are today, winning their first FA Cup in 1930 and first two league titles in 1931 and 1933 before passing away in January 1934.Mr Allison would round off the North Londoners’ Golden Era with two more titles and an FA Cup before the decade ended.The side which dispatched Spurs with ease included some of Arsenal’s most heroic players to ever roll out on the red carpet at Highbury.Frank MossThe man who stood in goal throughout much of Arsenal’s successful Golden Era, Moss most famously scored at Goodison Park after coming out of his goal with a dislocated shoulder during a 2-0 victory over Everton, ten days after Spurs were thrashed 6-0.He’s the only Arsenal goalkeeper to have ever found the back of the net in a league appearance.George MaleMale was one of the greatest defenders and right-backs of the pre-war era and lived longer than any of his Arsenal teammates, dying shortly before Arsène Wenger secured our second league and Cup double in history, aged 87.He spent just under 20 years at Arsenal as a player, from 1928 to 1949, playing almost 300 games for the Gunners.Jack CraystonCrayston was a superb, nimble player for Arsenal and certainly contributed to their mighty attacking strengths of this era.He later went on to manage the Gunners in the 1950s, where he struggled to eclipse his success as a player, guiding them to a highest position of fifth in 1957.Wilf CoppingCopping was known as the “Iron Man of football” throughout the 1930s and was far from being a man to mess with.According to legend, he even threatened to knock out Drake once after the then-newbie turned up and made a cheeky joke to him!He was an unyielding, clean-shaven defender with a strong boxer’s stature, deterring many attackers at the time from getting past him easily.He lived up to the motto: “The first man in a tackle never gets injured.”Cliff Bastin“Boy Bastin”, as he was nicknamed, was Arsenal’s top goalscorer for almost 60 years with 178 strikes before Ian Wright came along and smashed that record in 1997.Bastin was fetched from Third Division Exeter City by Chapman and went on to win five league titles and two FA Cups at Highbury.He and Drake shared an impressive goal tally between them during the 1930s, helping Arsenal conquer English football for the first time!Ted Drake (Photo by Central Press/Getty Images)Ted DrakeThe Gunner recently had a remembrance plaque erected for him at Highbury by his great-grandson, Just Arsenal writer Liam Harding, last year.He’s Arsenal’s fifth all-time top goalscorer with 138 strikes. During his ten-year stint from 1934 to 1945, he set the record for the most goals scored in a season at Arsenal with 44 and the most strikes claimed in an English top-flight game, scoring seven against Aston Villa on 14th December 1935.Six goals at White Hart LaneIn front of 47,714 keen North London fans, Drake snatched two strikes alongside Alfred Kirchen, on his Arsenal debut, with Bastin scoring from the penalty spot and Peter Dougall helping seal the 6-0 beating of Spurs – or “Spuds”, as many like to call them.The victory saw Arsenal increase their unbeaten streak at the time to 13 matches.A month later, Arsenal paraded through Highbury and Islington on an open-top bus after heralding their first and only hat-trick of league titles, something they haven’t managed since!At the other end of the scale, Spurs were relegated from the First Division, finishing bottom of the table and four points from safety.
