Tottenham Hotspur have been warned about a major weakness that Roberto De Zerbi showed when he was in charge of Brighton.De Zerbi was instrumental in keeping Spurs in the Premier League, managing to save a club that looked dead and buried and could not buy a win when he walked through the door.At the end of last season, the Tottenham boss demanded a huge summer rebuild of the squad and the club has certainly delivered his wish.In fact, De Zerbi has praised the Spurs board for their recruitment in the summer, but one journalist believes the Lilywhites may have bet the farm on the wrong man.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramTottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi made major recruitment mistakes at BrightonJournalist Alex Crook has now claimed that player recruitment has never been the Italian’s strong suit, even during his spell at Brighton.He shared that the only two signings that De Zerbi pushed for during his time at Amex Stadium both turned out to be flops, and questioned whether Spurs made the right decision to put the 46-year-old in charge of recruitment.Crook told talkSPORT: “This is a guy who when Tottenham first approached him to be their saviour last season, he turned the job down. He didn’t want to take over midway through the season. He wanted a clean break and to come in, in the summer. They chucked a ridiculous amount of money at him, a ridiculous bonus for keeping them in the Premier League but more importantly, in Roberto De Zerbi’s eyes, they gave him overall control of recruitment.“They don’t really have a director of football worthy of the name so not only is he the head coach, he’s also in control of the transfer policy at Spurs. All of these signings have been bought for excessive fees in my opinion at the whim of one man. Now I’m not sure whether Tottenham did their homework on Roberto De Zerbi and his time at Brighton. You look at the numbers and he was excellent. He took the Seagulls into Europe for the first time in their history.“They went deep in cup competitions, the football was pleasing on the eye but how many of those players did De Zerbi actually sign himself, how many of those players did he inherit as a gift from the genius that is Tony Bloom and his data-led approach to scouting. Well, I know he signed two players because this is one of the reasons they ended up falling out, De Zerbi and Bloom, because he didn’t want to be told anymore which players he was inheriting and he wanted to have a say in recruitment.“One of them was Mo Dahoud who came in from Germany and stunk the place out,” he began. And the other expensive mistake that Brighton made was a player called Ansu Fati and ironically they are going to meet in the Conference League when they take on Monaco. He absolutely flopped at the Amex and he was the most expensive player Brighton ever had. He was on ridiculous money for very little output. What on earth makes Tottenham think this guy can take the lead when it comes to recruitment?”Alex Crook says Spurs have overpaid for almost all their signingsCrook insisted that Tottenham ended up overpaying for almost all of their summer signings, suggesting that the Lilywhites were willing to reach the sort of numbers their rivals were not.He opined that cracks are already starting to appear at Spurs, with De Zerbi shifting blame onto others for the club’s poor start to the campaign.Crook continued: “Why did they put in £100m for Sandro Tonali when there was nobody else at the table? They were basically bidding against themselves. Why did they pay £85m for Matheus Fernandes? Relegated twice in successive seasons with two different clubs when nobody else was there.“Manchester United when the price tag was put on his head said ‘ you know what we’re alright, we’re going to sign Carlos Baleba. Why did they pay so much money for Jan Paul van Hecke who is a good Premier League player but not top class. He had one year left on his contract?“Savinho, £85m. I don’t know if Man City have put the phone down laughing yet. He got two Premier League goals last season. I think Tottenham’s recruitment has been poor. De Zerbi is already reverting to type, blaming other people. The medical staff came under the microscope didn’t they after they drew at the weekend.“I think this could end in disaster because what we know about De Zerbi is when things aren’t going his own way he’s very combustible.
