The United Nations says the country is the second-largest plastic polluter in the world after China. Scientists say the fundamental issue with understanding how microplastics affects human health is they cannot reliably measure the tiniest particles that can enter human cells. But in Indonesia, there are few of these facilities. Over time they are lifted into the air by wind and accumulate in the atmosphere. He has an air purifier at home, where he says the machine’s light is almost always red, a sign of the poor air quality outside.
