Tottenham Hotspur have picked up just one point from their first three Premier League games, but there have been three clear lessons for Roberto De Zerbi from each of them.Despite going unbeaten throughout pre-season, winning five and drawing two, Tottenham Hotspur have made a rather disappointing start to the new Premier League campaign.Roberto De Zerbi‘s men currently sit 18th in the division after 3 games, following defeats against Brentford and Newcastle United, before a goalless draw away to Nottingham Forest at the weekend. There have been different problems in each of those matches, but if De Zerbi has learned one lesson from each of them, there is every reason to believe Tottenham can start turning things around.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramTottenham 0-3 Brentford: physicality needs to improveIt was a huge summer of rebuilding for Tottenham, with the club bringing in 10 new players while allowing 19 to leave, and naturally, it will take time for such a new-look team to build an understanding on the pitch.Roberto De Zerbi admitted after the defeat that his side ‘are not a team yet’ and that they were not ready for the intensity of Premier League football. He later spoke about Tottenham’s struggles in winning duels and tackles, as well as their lack of physicality when dealing with second balls. The statistics backed that up; Brentford made 16 interceptions throughout the 90 minutes compared to just 4 from Tottenham. (FotMob)That came despite Spurs fielding a midfield three of Sandro Tonali, Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall, all players who are built to be strong physically, but they simply did not show enough of that on the ball.We will get to why that was the case in the next section, but the solution to this particular problem is fairly simple. De Zerbi’s men need to go all in for second balls and win duels more often.Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle United: mentality Spurs may have spent close to £400m in the transfer market this summer, but as De Zerbi himself said after the Newcastle defeat, “unfortunately, you can’t buy the mentality in the transfer market.”Spurs were a much-improved side compared to the Brentford game, recording more possession, a higher xG, more shots and more big chances than their opponent. The problem was what happened after Newcastle took the lead around the hour mark, when Tottenham’s heads began to drop, and they never looked capable of getting themselves back into the contest.De Zerbi criticised the reaction of his players after conceding, and rightly so. Tottenham have not overturned a deficit since November 2024, when they came from behind to beat Aston Villa 4-1.This is certainly not a problem that can simply be solved on the training ground. It requires all 11 players on the pitch to believe they can get themselves back into the game, and there needs to be a balance between panicking too much and becoming overly calm to the point where there is no threat at all. That should improve as Tottenham become better at scoring goals, which is something they have not done so far.Credit: @reclusemedia / InstagramTottenham 0-0 Nottingham Forest: Goals have to comeThe problems discussed above certainly improved against Nottingham Forest, with Tottenham keeping their first clean sheet of the season and looking solid across most areas of the pitch. The problem was in the final third. Tottenham are the only team alongside Aston Villa not to have scored a single Premier League goal so far, and there were no real excuses for failing to do so against Forest. You could argue that Spurs did not have a full-strength front three against Brentford and Newcastle, but that was not the case here, with Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel starting together.Savio and Marmoush were both good, although neither ever really looked like scoring, while Tel made far too many mistakes on the ball. De Zerbi described that problem himself, saying he ‘takes too many wrong decisions’.We will likely see the young Frenchman replaced by Mohammed Kudus at the weekend vs Everton as he returns to full fitness, with Savio moving over to the left. Hopefully, that brings better decision-making in the final third and, most importantly, the goals that Tottenham desperately need.READ MORE: Tottenham fans will not believe who Serge Aurier is about to sign for – Spurs WebThe post Three games, three lessons Roberto De Zerbi must use to revive Tottenham Hotspur appeared first on Spurs Web.
