For years, Jurassic Park fans have wanted the franchise to embrace its darker side.Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel was considerably more graphic than Steven Spielberg’s 1993 movie, with several dinosaur attacks described in brutal detail.While the film itself is often brutal in its own right, it toned much of that violence down; however, the books have always offered a glimpse at just how frightening and vicious this world could be.Credit: Universal PicturesIs Jurassic Park Returning to Its Horror Roots?Now, Jurassic Park: Survival could finally give fans a chance to experience that side of the franchise.The upcoming single-player action-adventure game takes place on Isla Nublar shortly after the events of the original Jurassic Park (1993), putting players in the role of InGen scientist Dr. Maya Joshi as she attempts to survive the abandoned park after failing to evacuate with her co-workers.While Survival is not being described as a horror game, it certainly isn’t shying away from dinosaur violence. The game’s official Steam page warns of “death and violence from dinosaurs against humans and against other dinosaurs,” as well as “intense science fiction terror.”Watch the trailer for Jurassic Park: Survival below:Related: ‘Jurassic Park’ Finally Gets R-Rated Treatment With New Short FilmThat sounds considerably closer to the dangerous spirit of the original Jurassic Park than some of the more family-friendly entries that followed.Interestingly, Saber Interactive is also developing Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, an explicitly survival horror game with “intense violence, blood, and gore.” If you’ve seen any of the Hellraiser films (which are not for the faint-hearted), you’ll know what to expect. The upcoming title takes first-person action horror survival to the next level and also features Pinhead and the Cenobites.Watch the trailer for the new game below:Of course, Jurassic Park: Survival is not Hellraiser, and we can’t imagine any fan of the beloved dinosaur franchise wanting it to become anywhere near as violent and as disturbing as Clive Barker’s nightmarish tale of torture.Still, the fact that the same developer is working on both projects is certainly intriguing for fans who have spent years asking for a darker take on Jurassic Park.What do you think of this unexpected connection between Jurassic Park and Hellraiser?
