Roberto De Zerbi has explained why he remains positive about his Tottenham side despite their failure to score in four Premier League games in a row.The Italian now has an undesirable record, being the first manager to oversee a Tottenham side which has failed to score in their first four games of a season in the club’s 144-year history.That is certainly not something many would have seen coming before the start of the season, given the optimism surrounding Spurs following their summer business.De Zerbi’s sides have always been associated with free-flowing and free-scoring attacking football, but this Tottenham team has shown little evidence that they can create chances with regularity.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramRoberto De Zerbi admits Tottenham players may have a mental block after four games without a goalThe 46-year-old has suggested his players are losing confidence in front of goal, with the mental block growing the longer they go without finding the back of the net.However, De Zerbi is optimistic the floodgates will open in front of goal for Tottenham as soon as things start clicking.When asked if it is playing on the players’ minds that they have not scored yet this season, the Italian told Football.London: “I think there is a word in Italian (sbloccarsi) that literally translates as if we unblock ourselves. I think the team is extremely strong…and we can score goals, and we can win games.“And then we have to respect the history of the players in their careers. Forget [Dominic] Solanke or [Omar] Marmoush. The other players, they didn’t score many, many goals in their career and we have to find these goals.“I think we can find the goals with the quality of the play, with the full-backs, because we have great full-backs. Robertson today played very well. I don’t know if we believe in the cross, and we prepared the game exactly in that way.“A mental block, because four games, no wins, any goals scored. It is tough also for the players because they are human and they are very good guys, and I asked them to follow me because if last season I was positive, I can’t understand why I can not be the same this season.“In Italy, for example, now I should be the best coach, no? I’m right, I guess.”De Zerbi dismissed the claim that he is making excusesWhen it was put to the Tottenham boss that the player’s physical condition and the club’s pre-season issues are sounding like excuses, De Zerbi was quick to hit back.He remarked that Spurs fans already know from last season that he is not one for excuses, and insisted that results are not always immediate in football.De Zerbi added: “I think the people and the fans, I think they already understood if I take an excuse or not. I came last season when the s*** was like this (puts his hand up to his forehead), you know? S***, I repeat. And I’ve always been, not positive, but realistic. Now, I explained, I’m sorry for the results, but it’s not immediate, no? Not the improvement, not immediate to make a team.“Today we played as a team. We didn’t score, we didn’t win, but today and Nottingham, I think we played as a team. And I can’t say nothing as an attitude, as a behaviour of the players, no, no. I said to stay calm, maybe to not lose the confidence because we are not scoring, we are not winning.
