Opposition leader Alex Borg has proposed the creation of a self-regulating media agency that could be responsible for issuing warrants to journalists, arguing that any such system should remain independent of government control.Speaking during an interview on Net television, Borg suggested that the agency could potentially be operated by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM), rather than having journalist warrants issued by a government authority.“If warrants were to be introduced, this agency would give out the warrants,” Borg said.However, the PN leader indicated that the introduction of journalist warrants was not set in stone, saying that if discussions showed such a system was not in the interests of journalists, the proposal could be scrapped altogether.Borg’s comments come amid debate over whether journalists in Malta should be subject to a warrant system and who, if anyone, should be responsible for regulating the profession.His proposal would see the media sector regulate itself through an independent body, with Borg arguing that responsibility for deciding who receives a warrant should not rest with the government.The suggestion of a self-regulating agency also comes as Borg speaks about a broader lack of trust in Malta’s institutions and the need to ensure greater independence from political interference.•
