Chris Algieri is concerned for former foe Conor Benn as he gears up for his WBC welterweight title tilt against Ryan Garcia this weekend.Algieri’s apprehension doesn’t stem from Benn’s boxing ability, but rather the physical toll of a heavy weight cut.Benn knocked out Algieri in the New Yorker’s last fight in 2021Mark Robinson/MatchroomBenn hasn’t made the 147lbs limit in four years, and looks extremely gaunt in recent pictures. ‘The Destroyer’ has already declared that his upcoming fight will be his last in the division due to the ‘excruciating’ process of boiling himself down to championship weight.Instead, Benn insisted he will skip super welterweight and look to compete at either middleweight or super middleweight going forward. His comments, combined with his current physique, have had Algieri, a qualified nutritionist and former world champion, fearing the worst. Conor Benn’s ‘worrisome’ weight cut“He was training hard two months ago for this, and he looked a little bit drawn then,” Algieri told BoxingScene.“Now it’s starting to get to that point. It’s still two weeks to go, and we’re seeing pictures like that. So it is worrisome.“When you’ve got a guy who’s three, four weeks out saying, ‘Oh, this is my last time fighting at this weight class,’ that tells you a lot.”The last time Benn made 147lbs was in April 2022, when he knocked out Chris van Heerden. His five most recent fights have been contested between 150lbs and 160lbs.“Eddie Hearn made such a great point,” Algieri added. “I think it was before the Regis Prograis fight.Benn has left Algieri and many others fearing the worst after uploading a series of snaps where he looks very gauntInstagram - Conor BennBenn hasn’t made the 147lbs weight limit since April 2022“He goes, ‘I think Conor should just fight at 160.’ It seemed like a crazy statement. “Then you’re like, actually, the best he’s ever looked was at 160.“Obviously, Eubank was depleted, but still, even the way that [Benn] was performing, he looked better there than he has at any other time. “And now to get himself back down, he has an opportunity for a title and a huge, huge payday. “But that might come around to bite him in the a** at the end of the day because the way he’s looking… it’s worrisome.”Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.
