In 2012, a NASA airborne science mission was launched to investigate hurricane formation and intensity change. The Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel, or HS3, ran from 2012 to 2014. NASA used Global Hawk uncrewed aircraft and instruments to study tropical storms, their formation, rapid intensification, inner-core structure, deep convection and the role of the Saharan Air Layer.
