“Tom Tiffany” by Gage Skidmore, CC BY-SA 4.0Republican Wisconsin Congressman and gubernatorial nominee Tom Tiffany narrowly escaped what could have been a horrific tragedy Saturday night after the small plane carrying him suddenly lost power while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport.The terrifying ordeal ended with Tiffany and the pilot scrambling out of the aircraft as it began sinking into Lake Wausau, and swimming to safety in the darkness.Tiffany, who is President Donald Trump’s endorsed Republican candidate for Wisconsin governor, was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner on Saturday, September 12, when the aircraft experienced the emergency.According to Tiffany, the pilot was forced to ditch the plane in Lake Wausau after it lost power during its approach to the airport.Tiffany wrote on X:“While returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner tonight, the plane I was traveling in lost power as we approached the Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau.”After the aircraft hit the water, Tiffany and the pilot managed to call 911.Then the plane began going under.“After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat,” Tiffany said.The two men were eventually reached by emergency personnel and transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.Tiffany thanked the pilot and the first responders who rushed to their aid.“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to our aid so quickly. They got us safely off the water and transported us to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where we received excellent care.”Both men escaped with only minor injuries.According to the Wausau Pilot & Review, Marathon County’s 911 center took the call at 8:49 p.m. Saturday. A Wausau Fire Department airboat had both men off the water by 9:05 p.m., about 16 minutes later. They were taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Both were treated and released. Tiffany’s campaign said he needed stitches for a cut above his right eye. The pilot was released as well.Tiffany closed his statement by crediting God for watching over them during the harrowing ordeal.“God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side. Tiffany, 68, was the only passenger. The aircraft was a four-seat Beechcraft K35 Bonanza.Preliminary word from the sheriff’s office is that the plane suffered a mechanical problem on approach. The FAA and NTSB have been notified and will investigate.
