Few figures in the bloodstock world have enjoyed a career as long and distinguished as Angus Gold, who spent 35 years working alongside the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and remains one of the industry's most respected judges.In the latest installment of TDN's Words to Live By series, Gold tells Gary King about the enormous influence Sheikh Hamdan had on his life and career, the importance of travelling and surrounding yourself with positive people, and the memorable advice handed down by his mother.TDN: Outside of your family, who has been the most important mentor in your career, and why?Angus Gold: Michael Oswald was the first man to give me a chance in the industry, and I owe him an enormous amount. However, having worked for him for 35 years, I would have to say Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.He had a huge understanding of and love for the bloodstock industry and was unbelievably supportive of it until the day he died. On top of that, he was incredibly loyal and taught me a great deal about life in general, as well as the horse world. I was truly blessed to have worked with him for so long.TDN: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?AG: “Stop getting married!” – from my mother.On a slightly more serious note, she also taught me to “always treat others the way you would like to be treated yourself.”TDN: What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the Thoroughbred industry today?AG: Travel as much as you can. You will learn something wherever you go.
