A MAGA influencer, former US Department of Energy nuclear scientist and committed Christian has detailed his moral conundrum after realizing his charity work may be helping the children of immigrants. In a post on X, Matt Van Swol revealed his fears after a Christian organization he was a part of put out a call for school supplies and birthday presents “for needy kids.” But he was shocked when he received the requests as: “They were written entirely in Spanish.” Van Swol explains he then contacted the organization and demanded to know if the needy kids were Americans “or illegal aliens”. He alleges they refused to tell him. Van Swol now says he’s in a conundrum, as the Christian organization apparently informed him that “it shouldn’t matter to me what their immigration status is and that Jesus commands us to give.” Now he’s wondering whether it’s really that un-Christian to prioritize American children over those born in immigrant families. “You can’t call yourself a Christian and be picky who you help” As he reasons: “There are poor AMERICAN families in my own community who are struggling. Many simply ask him to consider, “What would Jesus do?“, with one pointing out, “Jesus did not save the Israelites from the Romans. He fed, healed, and taught all who would listen. Though I am 100% for secure borders and for ALL illegal deportation, I would still help the children. Don’t let your politics drive your faith.” Another said, “You can’t call yourself a Christian and be picky who you help Matt. It doesn’t work that way. There is no such thing as an immigrant, we are all people of the one planet we inhabit. All children under one sun. Jesus understood that, will you!?” And, succinctly, one said: “They are children. You help them if you’re Christian!” In somewhat more critical language, another said, “Get a different religion, because you suck at being a follower of Jesus, who would not have hesitated for a second at helping anyone, regardless of where they came from or how they got here.” As of writing, it does not appear that Van Swol has decided whether he’s going to help the needy immigrant children. He has not followed up on his post, or engaged with the responses from Christians attempting to provide spiritual counsel to encourage him to aid those in need.
