Malta is set to take centre stage in the global tourism industry this October, with more than 200 travel and tourism leaders expected on the island for a major international summit.The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit will take place in Malta between 7th and 9th October, bringing together industry leaders, investors, policymakers and experts from across the globe.The government is positioning the event as an opportunity for Malta to showcase not only its current tourism offering, but its plans for a more sustainable, innovative and higher-quality tourism sector.According to the Tourism Ministry, the summit will provide a platform for collaboration, investment and knowledge-sharing, while potentially opening the door to new business and investment opportunities for Malta.A key message Malta intends to push during the summit is that destinations with a strong heritage and identity can embrace new technology and innovation without sacrificing what makes them unique.Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela said Malta isn’t hosting the summit simply to show the world what the country currently has to offer.“Malta will showcase not only where it stands today, but where it aims to be tomorrow: a higher-quality, more sustainable, resilient and future-ready destination,” Abela said.He said the government’s vision centres around “quality tourism that creates value”, pointing towards further investment in infrastructure, connectivity and innovation, alongside efforts to improve visitors’ experiences.At the same time, he said Malta must protect the identity, heritage, environment and hospitality that make the islands distinctive.WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara said Malta will find itself “at the centre of the global conversation on Travel & Tourism” during the three-day gathering.She thanked the Maltese government and the Malta Tourism Authority for helping bring the summit to the island, saying the organisation looks forward to showcasing Malta’s tourism story while discussing how the global sector can become more resilient, innovative and sustainable.Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef echoed the focus on quality, saying hosting the summit provides an opportunity to present Malta as both the destination it is today and the one it wants to become.“Our focus is firmly on quality: offering better experiences to visitors and creating long-term value, while protecting our communities, heritage and identity,” he said.The summit comes as Malta continues to grapple with the balancing act at the heart of its tourism strategy: attracting visitors and investment while ensuring that tourism growth remains sustainable for the islands and the people who live here.What do you think Malta should prioritise as it pushes towards a more sustainable, quality-focused tourism model?•
