Repubblika has launched a response to Joseph Muscat following his press conference on the Daphne Caruana Galizia case, accusing the former Prime Minister of attempting to “rewrite history”.The rule of law NGO argued that Muscat was attempting to use Yorgen Fenech’s recent acquittal to undermine the conclusions of the public inquiry into Caruana Galizia’s assassination.“Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal does not erase the answer to that question,” Repubblika said, stressing that the criminal trial and public inquiry dealt with different questions.While saying it respects the role of jurors and the authority of the Court, Repubblika rejected Muscat’s criticism of reactions to the verdict, arguing that disagreement and public anger should not be characterised as the “rule of the mob”.The NGO pointed towards the public inquiry’s findings concerning Muscat’s decisions not to remove Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi following the Panama Papers revelations and subsequent revelations surrounding 17 Black.It argued that Fenech’s acquittal does not overturn the inquiry’s findings concerning Muscat’s political and institutional responsibility or its conclusion that a culture of impunity had facilitated Caruana Galizia’s assassination.“Joseph Muscat has no right to rewrite history,” Repubblika said.The organisation concluded by stressing that while Fenech was acquitted of the charges against him, “Joseph Muscat has not been absolved of his responsibility.”What do you make of Repubblika’s response to Muscat?•
