Walt Disney World is always changing, but not every change guests hear about actually makes it into the parks.Over the years, Disney has announced plenty of ambitious projects that looked like sure things at the time. Concept art was released. Executives talked about what guests could expect. In some cases, Disney even displayed models and artwork inside the parks.Then, without much fanfare, those plans disappeared.Credit: DisneyEPCOT has been particularly familiar with this situation. Disney announced a huge transformation for the park in 2019, but the version guests eventually received looked different from those original plans.Three projects stand out among the ideas that never became reality: a Mary Poppins attraction in World Showcase, the PLAY! Pavilion, and the long-running possibility of another country joining World Showcase.Each project reached a different stage of development, but all three now appear to have been left behind as Disney moves EPCOT in another direction.Mary Poppins Was Supposed to Get Her Own EPCOT AttractionOne of the most memorable announcements from the 2019 D23 Expo involved the United Kingdom Pavilion.Disney brought Dick Van Dyke onstage to announce that Mary Poppins was coming to EPCOT.This wasn’t going to be a simple character appearance or a small addition tucked into the existing pavilion. Disney had much bigger plans.Credit: DisneyThe company intended to create a recreation of Cherry Tree Lane inspired by the Mary Poppins films. Guests would have been able to enter the new area from the United Kingdom Pavilion and experience another piece of the world associated with the character.Disney released concept art for the project and included it among the many additions planned for EPCOT’s transformation.The attraction itself was later revealed to be an indoor teacup-style ride.While that might not have been the massive attraction some fans initially imagined, it still would have represented a major change for the United Kingdom Pavilion. Unlike several other World Showcase locations, the pavilion doesn’t have a traditional ride.Mary Poppins would have changed that.For a while, everything seemed to be moving forward.Then Walt Disney World closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.Credit: Inside the MagicConstruction stopped across EPCOT, and Disney began reevaluating several of the projects it had previously announced.When work eventually resumed, Mary Poppins was noticeably absent.Disney later acknowledged that development of the attraction had been postponed while the company reconsidered its long-term project plans.The years that followed didn’t bring the project back.Disney continued working on EPCOT, completing other portions of the park’s transformation while the Mary Poppins attraction remained missing.At this point, the Cherry Tree Lane expansion and its indoor attraction have effectively joined the long list of Disney concepts that guests saw but never experienced.The PLAY! Pavilion Suffered a Similar FateMary Poppins wasn’t the only major EPCOT project announced in 2019 that disappeared.Disney also planned to breathe new life into the former Wonders of Life pavilion.The building had gone largely unused for years, but Disney seemingly found its next purpose with the announcement of the PLAY! Pavilion.Disney described the project as an interactive futuristic city where guests could interact with several Disney characters.Rather than building the pavilion around one major ride, Disney planned a collection of interactive experiences.The concept art showed a bright, colorful environment filled with technology and familiar characters. It was supposed to give EPCOT another indoor area where guests could explore at their own pace.Disney heavily promoted the pavilion while discussing EPCOT’s transformation.Like Mary Poppins, however, the project ran into problems after the 2020 closure.Other EPCOT construction projects eventually restarted, but PLAY! never appeared to make the same progress.Credit: DisneyThe signs became harder to ignore as the years passed.In 2023, Disney dropped the PLAY! Pavilion from EPCOT’s guide maps.At that point, Disney said the concept was being reevaluated. That left open at least some possibility that a modified version could eventually move forward.By 2026, another clue made the project’s fate much clearer.Disney removed the PLAY! Pavilion flag from the park’s central plaza.That might seem like a small detail, but it represented another piece of the original EPCOT transformation disappearing from the park.Years after Disney first revealed PLAY!, guests still haven’t seen the futuristic city become reality.The former Wonders of Life building therefore remains one of EPCOT’s biggest unanswered questions.World Showcase Still Isn’t Getting Another CountryThe third project is different because it isn’t centered around one specific modern attraction.Instead, it involves something EPCOT fans have wanted for decades: another country in World Showcase.World Showcase has remained remarkably stable when it comes to its lineup of nations.Norway was the last country added, and that happened nearly four decades ago.That doesn’t mean Disney hasn’t considered other options.Over EPCOT’s history, Disney has developed ideas for several additional countries that never moved forward.One proposal would have brought Costa Rica to EPCOT with a large greenhouse featuring tropical plants and birds.Disney also developed plans for an Equatorial Africa pavilion. That concept would have included a massive 60-foot treehouse and a live show called “Heartbeat of Africa.”Iran was considered for a pavilion that would have included a dark ride exploring Persian history along with a shopping area inspired by a bazaar. Those plans disappeared following the Iranian Revolution.Israel was another proposed addition. Disney advertised the pavilion on billboards around the time EPCOT opened. Plans included a recreation of ancient Jerusalem, an open-air restaurant, and a courtyard stage.Budget and security concerns ultimately prevented that project from becoming reality.The list doesn’t stop there.Puerto Rico was considered as part of EPCOT’s planned “Phase II” expansion.Disney also considered a Soviet Union or Russian-inspired pavilion featuring architecture based around the Moscow Kremlin and a replica of St. Basil’s Cathedral.Spain was advertised during the 1980s. Plans reportedly included architecture inspired by Barcelona and Madrid, along with a restaurant, film, and boat ride.Switzerland could have been particularly interesting for attraction fans because Disney considered bringing a Matterhorn Bobsleds-style attraction to EPCOT.Credit: Anna Fox (HarshLight), FlickrOther proposals included the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.Despite all those concepts, none joined World Showcase.And another traditional country pavilion now seems increasingly unlikely.Disney’s recent theme park strategy has focused heavily on recognizable characters and established franchises. Building an entirely new World Showcase pavilion without a major Disney property attached would represent a different approach.That doesn’t make another country impossible, but there is currently no indication that Disney is preparing to finally expand World Showcase with another nation.Disney Has Shown That Old Ideas Can ReturnThere is one reason fans may not want to completely forget these projects.Disney has already demonstrated that an abandoned EPCOT idea can return years later in a different form.Spaceship Earth is one example.Disney announced plans for a major refurbishment of the attraction in 2019. That project was another casualty of the changes that followed Walt Disney World’s 2020 closure.For years, the refurbishment appeared to be gone.Then Disney surprised fans at D23 in 2026 by announcing new plans for Spaceship Earth.The updated concept will focus on human communication and connection while maintaining the classic EPCOT identity of the attraction.Dreamfinder offers another example.Fans spent decades asking Disney to reunite the beloved character with Figment. Those requests seemed unlikely to produce anything substantial after so many years.Then came the 2026 D23 Ultimate Fan Event.Disney confirmed Dreamfinder would return, proving that even ideas fans have waited decades to see can suddenly find their way back into EPCOT’s plans.EPCOT’s Original Transformation Changed Along the WayLooking back at Disney’s original EPCOT transformation announcements shows just how much can change between concept art and opening day.The Mary Poppins attraction would have given the United Kingdom Pavilion its first traditional ride and expanded the area with Cherry Tree Lane.PLAY!
