Non league club Gainsborough Trinity is ‘aware’ of an individual is impersonating their manager Russ Wilcox.The individual, while posing as Wilcox, has proposed wage offers and potential transfers to players.Someone is pretending to be Wilcox (left)GettyThe Northern Premier League, the seventh tier of English football, and the Football Association have both been made aware of the incidents.FA regulations prohibit direct contact between managers and players, with all transfer approaches required to go through formal club-to-club communications.Gainsborough Trinity CEO issues statement“We want to make it categorically clear that these approaches have not been made by Russ Wilcox, nor have they been made on behalf of Gainsborough Trinity Football Club,” Gainsborough chief executive Matt Boles said in a statement.“We strongly condemn the actions of the individual responsible. Impersonating a football manager and making false representations to players is completely unacceptable and has the potential to cause unnecessary disruption and reputational damage to players, managers and clubs.”Boles also expressed gratitude to managers and club officials who reached out directly to Wilcox after they received an approach from the individual who impersonated the coach.“Finally, to the person responsible: enough is enough,” Boles continued.“Stop impersonating our manager, stop wasting the time of players and clubs across the non-league game and, quite frankly, get a life.”Russ Wilcox’s coaching career at a glanceWilcox has been in charge of Lincolnshire-based Gainsborough since September 2023.He has previously managed Scunthorpe United, York City and Farsley Celtic over the course of a decade.Prior to his managerial career, Wilcox spent time working as an assistant coach under Brian Laws.Wilcox followed Laws from Scunthorpe to Sheffield Wednesday in 2006.Gainsborough reached the first round proper of last season’s FA CupGettyThe pair reunited at Burnley in January 2010, but could not save the club from Premier League relegation at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.How have Gainsborough Trinity performed this season?Gainsborough play in the seventh tier of English football and are currently eighth in the league table, one place outside the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division play-off spots this term.Wilcox’s side have won four, drawn once and lost three times in their first eight league fixtures to sit on 13 points, six behind league leaders Cleethorpes Town.Gainsborough will look to put the off-field drama behind them when they host Avro on Saturday.The club then travels to Leamington on September 19 in FA Cup second qualifying round.
