Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been changing quickly, but one of its newest additions has felt surprisingly old-school.Over the last several months, guests walking through the Walt Disney Studios Lot have encountered Disney characters roaming freely through the courtyard. Instead of standing in a traditional meet-and-greet line, visitors might suddenly find themselves playing a game with Donald Duck or sharing an unexpected moment with Rapunzel.It has felt like a return to the kind of spontaneous character interactions that longtime Disney fans remember.However, there was a major question hanging over the experience. With The Magic of Disney Animation preparing to open on September 14, many wondered whether these roaming characters were simply temporary.Disney has now confirmed they aren’t going away.Disney Is Keeping Roaming Characters at Hollywood StudiosThe roaming character interactions began when the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard opened on May 26.Since then, Disney has used the space differently from a normal character location. Guests don’t necessarily know exactly what they’ll encounter when they enter the courtyard.Rapunzel has braided hair with guests. Mulan has practiced warrior poses. Guests plan dining reservations, Lightning Lane selections, entertainment schedules, and traditional character meet-and-greets.The courtyard characters have offered something different.You don’t necessarily plan for these moments. You simply stumble into them.That makes the experience feel like “vintage Disney,” when unexpected character encounters could become some of the most memorable parts of a park day.Fans Had a Reason to WorryThe concern was always what would happen once The Magic of Disney Animation officially opened.Several characters currently appearing outside are scheduled to move into dedicated meet-and-greet locations inside Off the Page.Disney has confirmed six character locations there featuring Rapunzel, Mulan, Chip ‘n’ Dale, Donald and Daisy, Goofy, and Stitch. A fixed lineup with posted times can quickly turn into another attraction guests feel they need to schedule.A changing rotation keeps some spontaneity intact.Disney is even taking the idea beyond the courtyard. Guests who specifically want to meet Rapunzel, Stitch, Donald, or another favorite can still seek out those experiences.But the courtyard offers another kind of Disney interaction entirely.“Vintage Disney” Isn’t Going AnywhereSometimes the smallest additions make the biggest difference in a theme park.Hollywood Studios has major attractions, elaborate lands, nighttime entertainment, and plenty of experiences that require significant planning. Yet watching a Disney character unexpectedly wander across a courtyard and start interacting with guests can create something a carefully scheduled experience can’t always replicate.That’s why these roaming characters have been such a welcome addition.They bring some unpredictability back into the park.More importantly, Disney could have easily ended the concept once The Magic of Disney Animation opened. Instead, the company has confirmed that the courtyard will maintain an ongoing roaming character presence after September 14.We still don’t know which characters will take over outside, and Disney hasn’t revealed what the new rotation will look like.But the biggest question has finally been answered.That little piece of “vintage Disney” isn’t disappearing when the doors to The Magic of Disney Animation open.
