It probably wasn't quite the gate-to-wire trip his connections hoped for, but when called on to show his heart, Lennox the Grey (Liam's Map) did not disappoint by battling back late to win the GIII Old Dominion Derby at Colonial Downs. The grey began his career at Woodbine in the barn of Catherine Day-Phillips and broke his maiden last September in what turned out to be his final jump in her program. Taken to the sidelines after that effort until July 6 this season, he returned to the races at this venue for trainer Arnaud Delacour and ran second by a neck to 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Dr. Agne (Into Mischief) in a non-winners of two allowance. As many runners do, Lennox the Grey improved off the return from a layoff and was a dominant winner last out Aug. 1 over this course.Attracting support at the windows to the tune of 9-2 odds here, he broke well and immediate controlled a slow pace through :24.57, :50.80, and six panels in an easy 1:15.54 with Chambersville (Twirling Candy) never far away. They didn't let him have his way for too much longer as his longtime shadow was the first to issue a challenge on the far turn and the duo was battling for command by the time they arrived at the top of the lane.Fighting bravely as The Big Con (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) dove to the fence at the sixteenth pole and Chambersville refused to go away from the outside, Lennox the Grey had to give all he had, but he slowly inched back onto even terms with the inside rival, who had briefly taken the lead. They hit the wire with precious inches to spare between them, and the grey had gotten his nostrils down in the nick of time to win the photo. Chambersville was a half-length back in third. Photo finish!!The $500,000 Old Dominion Derby (G3) ultimately went to #4 LENNOX THE GREY ($11.40).
