Danny Murphy believes Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez are the two biggest problems in Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool team.The Reds splashed out around £80million on the duo in the summer of 2025, but the transfers are yet to work out.Murphy believes Iraola’s full-backs are Liverpool’s weak linksGettyA lot of stick has come the way of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz due to their price tags.However, it is the full-back duo who Murphy is more concerned about.When asked about Isak and Wirtz, Murphy said on Kick Off: “The bigger problem for Liverpool because at times at Anfield, they are going to dominate the ball so much that the press isn’t going to be that important.“The bigger problem is that the full-backs aren’t good enough at Liverpool. They are not good enough. “They are not going to get better, it is not in them.“They are 100mph. They are working hard but their level of crossing and choice of final pass is really poor.“It looks worse for the Liverpool fans when you have been so used to seeing two of the best we’ve ever seen in Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, in terms of assists, quality and picking the final pass.“They have brought in two full-backs, who aren’t as good. I think they are okay defensively, not brilliant, but they are okay.“And going forward, the best teams have really good full-backs on the ball because teams clog up the middle of the pitch, so the space is wide.“Your full-backs get so much of the ball, and Frimpong and Kerkez just don’t have that quality that you need to open up teams.”Frimpong started Liverpool’s first two Premier League games, but began on the bench for their most recent outingGettyKerkez worked under Iraola at Bournemouth, but has made a shaky start to the seasonGettyFrimpong’s issuesDuring his time in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, Frimpong scored 30 goals and provided 44 assists in 190 games.He became one of the best prospects on the market when it came to wing-backs, with the Dutchman a key part of the Xabi Alonso team that went a whole domestic campaign unbeaten to claim two trophies.However, he was largely played as just a wing-back throughout his time with Leverkusen, and Liverpool don’t use wing-backs.On Friday, he was dropped for Ronald Araujo, and after the match, Andoni Iraola said: “With Ronald, the thinking was about Fatawu swinging crosses into the box and Ipswich puts a lot of balls in.“Those crosses and second balls, and also set pieces, I felt that Ronald could help us. He was very important.“We will need Jeremie Frimpong when we need to be more offensive and others we will need Ronald. We will take that decision according to the game.”Iraola might have a decision to make regarding his full-backsAFPGabby Agbonlahor believes that Dominik Szoboszlai should play at right-back over Frimpong.Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said: “If you’ve got [Ryan] Gravenberch on the bench last week against Forest – Gravenberch comes in with [Alexis] McAllister in that midfield and [Florian] Wirtz. “And it just makes sense, because Frimpong does not have the quality and he’s never going to have the quality.“He’s a wing-back, not a full-back.”Kerkez’s strugglesHungary international Kerkez made his name at Bournemouth as a flying left-back, who epitomised Iraola’s intense and aggressive football.An outstanding 2024/25 season earned his move to Anfield.Under Arne Slot, the Dutchman appeared reluctant to initially let him off the leash, and so many players struggled for Liverpool last year.Iraola is now the Liverpool head coach and has started Kerkez in all three Premier League games so far.But even he has struggled still to replicate that form from his time on the south coast.Speaking after the win over Ipswich, he said: “[Milos] Kerkez had a difficult game against [Abdul] Fatawu but he was very aggressive and I liked his game.”There is still quite a while until the January transfer window, so plenty of time for both to show improvement, but Murphy is basically writing them off.
