Ugandan journalist and media entrepreneur Andrew Mwenda has responded to Tooro Kingdom Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Olimi’s statement, in which she alleges that he announced a new king of the Kingdom installed by a self-appointed group.Mwenda states that following King Oyo’s demise, an official meeting attended by more than 100 princes and princesses selected a team of 21 members to form the Royal Succession Committee headed by the Musuuga.He reveals that the selected team had no official knowledge that the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV had a son, Jackson Oyo.The committee began its work on August 31st, 2026. Its aim was to find a new king. Please note, that up to the time of Oyo’s death, there had never been any official or even informal communication to the babiito that King Oyo had sired a child, leave alone a son.According to Andrew Mwenda, the information was later provided by Queen Best Kemigisa’s brother, Patrick Kawamara. It was discovered that the purported son’s mother was from the Muhinda clan, but no photo of him was provided.Now the committee had gotten two different names for the purported son, there was no photo of him yet all other candidates had to be represented with photos of them. The committee found this dubious and decided to remove Oyo’s purported son from the list of considerations.A vote by secret ballot was taken, and George Kamurasi was selected as the new Omukama of Tooro.Despite not declining the throne, Kamurasi reportedly asked to consult his wife and business partners in London, which stretched the period of succession, hence forcing the committee to announce the next suitable nominee on Wednesday, 9th September 2026.Andrew Mwenda maintains that in Tooro, there is no automatic stipulation that the late king’s son becomes the heir to the throne and argues that for Jackson Oyo to become king, he would have to have been born to a Mutoro queen officially married to the King.In the will, written on September 14, 2022, there is only a hypothetical heir. But most importantly, in Toro, it is not automatic that a king’s son becomes heir to the throne. He would have to have been born to a Mutoro queen officially married to the king (omugowekitebe).A king cannot sleep with a prostitute on the street or a house maid, produce a son and it is hoisted onto the throne. This is not to suggest that Oyo did any of this. It is simply to say that he was not officially married, and if he left a son, Toro needs to know the mother and her backgroundI have been compelled by the statement of the Queen Mother (QM), Best Kemigisa, to clarify on succession in Toro.
