The Seattle Seahawks kicked off the 2026 NFL season on Wednesday night with a 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots at Lumen Field in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. With 26 seconds remaining, New England, sixth in talkSPORT’s 2026 NFL Power Rankings, had the chance to win it after Patriots quarterback Drake Maye drove the team into the red zone for a potential go-ahead score.Maye only had one game of numerous interceptions last years – also against the Seahawks, in the Super BowlGettyHowever, facing third-and-5 from Seattle’s 16-yard line, Maye, last season’s NFL MVP runner-up, threw a terrible pass that effectively ended the game. The 24-year-old, who was urged to take the spotlight off head coach Mike Vrabel heading into the game, was flushed out of the pocket and threw a bad pass to Pats wide receiver Mack Hollins in the end zone which was picked off by Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe.Maye tossed three interceptions on the night, all of which came in the fourth quarter, but it was his inexplicable third pick that left NBC announcers Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth baffled by his thought-process.Tirico and Collinsworth stunned by Maye’s ‘terrible decision’“A terrible decision!” Tirico exclaimed on the broadcast.“I can’t believe that throw,” a stunned Collinsworth replied.“Wow,” he continued after staying silent for a while. “I mean, there are certain things you just can’t do or try when you have field goal range and overtime in your grasp. And that was the play. Off his back foot, fading away, and didn’t get it out of bounds. Ouch.”“The last play was disastrous for Drake Maye,” Tirico added.Fans were just as baffled with Maye’s decision, calling him out for attempting that kind of risky pass given the circumstances at that stage in the game.“The final Drake Maye INT is difficult to explain,” one person wrote on X. I love Drake Maye,” another wrote. “He’s a stud and the Patriots future. He’s got to improve his decision making and reduce the turnovers.”Maye completed 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions, and a 54.9 passer rating. It was another multi-interception game for the signal caller, who only had one all last season, against the Seahawks, in Super Bowl LX.Afterwards, Maye admitted that he lost patience on the crucial play of the game and it cost the team.“I lost patience, and it cost us,” he told reporters.“Decisions that cost us the game on my part…you can’t have those, it’s unacceptable. I gotta get back to work, because that wasn’t how I play football.”Speaking about his his flea-flicker to A.J. Brown, which was underthrown but subsequently bailed out by a pass-interference call, Maye added: “I think the one to A.J. [Brown], he’s wide open. “I didn’t wanna try to overthrow it on the flea flicker. I think other than that I’m just trying to [place the ball]. Ball placement’s key in this league. I’m tryna make sure I put the ball in the right spot, and I didn’t.”View Tweet: https://t.co/KZvJsdkqxNThe Patriots led for most of the game and had a 10-3 lead entering the fourth quarter. But then Mike Vrabel’s team began to unravel, starting with quarterback Maye, who threw his first pick of the game after attempting a deep pass to wideout Romeo Doubs that was intercepted by Nathaniel Pritchett.Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 45-yard touchdown shortly after evened the contest at 10-10, right before Maye threw his second interception after attempting to find DeMario Douglas with a pass over the middle.Seattle safety Julian Love read Maye’s telegraphed pass perfectly and picked him off which ultimately led to the Seahawks going up 13-10 after Jason Myers’ 26-yard field goal.Maye’s third and final pick came right at the death, which sealed the win for the Seahawks in a repeat of the result in last year’s Super Bowl.
