Gozitan residents who find themselves stranded in Malta when ferry services are suspended due to extreme weather will now be able to claim back eligible accommodation costs under a permanent government scheme.Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri announced that the measure, which had previously been offered in such circumstances, has now been made permanent during the first 100 days of the new legislature.“When the Gozo Channel service is suspended due to extreme weather conditions, Gozitan residents can end up stranded in Malta and have to find accommodation out of their own pockets,” Camilleri said.The scheme is intended to cover eligible stays in hotels, hostels and other licensed accommodation, reducing the unexpected financial burden on Gozitans unable to return home because of conditions beyond their control.Residents can apply through the MyGozo App, through the government’s online services using their eID, or in person at the servizz.gov hub in St Francis Square, Victoria.Applicants will need to retain official accommodation receipts and submit the required documentation within the timeframe established by the scheme.Camilleri said the permanent measure was intended to ensure that Gozitan residents are not left carrying accommodation costs when severe weather prevents them from travelling home.What do you make of this scheme?•
