But researchers wanted to know whether the way a person breathes during that distraction is associated with measurable differences in working memory.A study published on September 3, 2026, in Scientific Reports examined this question in 54 healthy young women. Phan Anh Nguyen and Kyungmo Park are affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Kyung Hee University in South Korea, while Seulgi Eun is affiliated with the KM Science Research Division and the NeuroGlymph Imaging and Modulation Center at the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. The researchers compared natural breathing, slow-deep breathing, and fast-shallow breathing while participants completed memory tasks containing negative emotional distractions.The results showed different patterns for the three breathing conditions. Fast-shallow breathing produced speed without the same accuracy patternFast-shallow breathing also made responses faster. However, unlike slow-deep breathing, it did not significantly improve accuracy compared with natural breathing under negative distraction.The decision-model analysis showed a different pattern as well. During fast-shallow breathing, measures related to evidence accumulation and decision caution were reduced, while non-decision processes became faster. The researchers described this as a trade-off that prioritized speed over decision quality.Fast-shallow breathing was also associated with physiological changes consistent with reduced cardiac parasympathetic activity and greater sympathetic arousal.4. Some participants naturally slowed their breathing during emotional distractionThe researchers also looked at what happened when participants were not told how to breathe.Among participants whose breathing naturally became slower during negative emotional distraction, the researchers did not observe the same significant decline in working-memory accuracy and response speed seen in participants whose breathing became faster. This subgroup also showed lower heart rate and a pattern consistent with greater cardiovagal involvement.Because this was an exploratory analysis, the authors do not claim that spontaneous slow breathing and deliberate slow breathing use exactly the same mechanism.What Do the Authors Conclude?The authors interpret the results as evidence that, within this laboratory experiment, slow breathing was associated with a different pattern of emotional and autonomic regulation than fast-shallow breathing.They suggest that deliberately slowing breathing may engage a response that can also appear naturally during emotional stress.
