MLS announces historic 2026 year for transfer revenue

2026 has been a memorable year for Major League Soccer.MLS announced league records for both player acquisition and transfer revenue on Wednesday, continuing a rise into one of the world’s top leagues. Clubs within MLS spent a record $370 million in the transfer market while also generating $218 million in transfer revenue, building the league’s continued growth as a destination for top players. Transfer spending has risen by $200 million from 2021 to 2026, with figures likely to increase once again in 2027. The $218 million in transfer revenue is a $158 million increase from 2021.Over the last two seasons, MLS clubs have invested more than $700 million on acquisition fees alone, with a focus on signing impact players in their prime. 60% of the international signings made in 2026 were players aged 25-years-old or younger. Robert Lewandowski, Antoine Griezmann, Casemiro, Josh Sargent, and German Berterame were among the standout player acquisitions this year.In addition, several MLS products made the move abroad, including Sebastian Berhalter, Max Arfsten, and Benjamin Cremaschi, garnering major transfer fees for their respective clubs. Zavier Gozo generated the second-largest transfer fee for a Homegrown Player in MLS history in the summer window when he joined Crystal Palace of the English Premier League. Seven clubs earned record acquisition fees in 2026, which featured Lucas Herrington’s move to Hull City, Luca Bombino’s transfer to Stoke City, and Gabriel Pec’s departure to Cruzeiro.Inter-league player trades have also been a major success in 2026, with MLS clubs spending $46 million to date this year on those deals. MLS will seek continued growth in these areas and more as the league prepares for a shift to its playing calendar in 2027.
