Eight months since his last competitive goal for Leeds United, Brenden Aaronson was able to celebrate that moment once again.Aaronson scored his first goal of the new English season despite Leeds United’s 6-3 EFL Cup third round loss to Chelsea on Wednesday night. The U.S. Men’s National Team attacker played 67 minutes in Daniel Farke’s starting lineup, delivering one of his better performances of the new campaign. Leeds United held a 1-0 advantage at the break thanks to Tarik Muharemovic’s first goal for the club after 24 minutes. However, a thrilling second-half saw the Lilywhites grab a two-goal lead before Xabi Alonso’s Blues eventually broke out of their funk. Aaronson capped off a play in the Chelsea box in the 48th minute, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Lukas Nmecha flicked on a cross, allowing Aaronson to rifle home into the bottom-left corner.It marked Aaronson’s first competitive goal for the club since January 7. Cole Palmer scored twice in a two-minute span before Pedro Neto and Danny Welbeck added their names to the scoresheet not long after. Dominic Calvert-Lewin trimmed the Leeds United deficit to 4-3 with 15 minutes to play but Chelsea would seal their spot in the fourth round thanks to Valentin Barco’s confident finish and Welbeck’s second tally of the night. The result was Leeds United’s first defeat of the new campaign in all competitions. Farke’s men will continue Premier League play on September 14 when Newcastle United comes to Elland Road.
