Opposition leader Alex Borg has given the government until October to begin implementing the recommendations of the Daphne Caruana Galizia public inquiry, saying the five-year wait has gone on long enough.Asked about the deadline in an interview with Lovin Malta, Borg stressed that it applies to all the inquiry’s recommendations, not just anti-SLAPP legislation.“Five years. The public inquiry wasn’t done yesterday,” he said, noting that Prime Minister Robert Abela had repeatedly promised to implement its recommendations.Borg said he had been consistent on the issue even before the election, including during his debate with Abela, when he said a PN government would have moved immediately to implement the recommendations.He said the Opposition’s motion calling for their implementation had also been presented several times, meaning the government could not claim it did not know what the recommendations involved.“It’s long overdue after five years,” Borg said, adding that the October deadline was intended to push the government to discuss the motion and start implementing the recommendations.Asked what would happen if nothing was done by October, Borg said the PN had a plan to apply pressure both inside and outside Parliament.“We cannot allow the government to roll over everyone” following an episode that had left such a mark on Malta, he said, accusing the government of allowing things to continue as “business as usual”.Borg has previously highlighted anti-SLAPP protections as one of the areas requiring action, but his demand in the interview was for the full implementation of the public inquiry’s recommendations.What do you make of this?•
