Bad news for Kansas City Chiefs fans – their new stadium looks to be dropping the iconic Arrowhead name. Arrowhead Stadium has been home to the Chiefs for over 50 years, but despite renovations, the amphitheatre has fallen far behind the standards of the influx of new state-of-the-art stadiums popping up all over the NFL. The Chiefs have called Arrowhead home for over 50 yearsGettyKansas City has decided to follow suit, with the four-time Super Bowl champions formalizing their plans to move across state lines into Kansas back in December 2025. There, they have begun cementing plans to build a $3 billion state-of-the-art domed stadium in Wyandotte County, which would allow them to host a plethora of other events outside of football, year-round.The $4.5 billion capital investment project will also facilitate the construction of a new $300 million practice facility and headquarters in Olathe, as well as two private real estate development areas totaling a cost of $1.2 billion.In July, the Chiefs unveiled the first renderings of their proposed new stadium, with its architecture clearly paying homage to Arrowhead with its swooping upper deck that curves. Despite its iconic name, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt revealed that the new stadium – tipped to open in 2031 – will not bear the Arrowhead name. “I don’t think we’ll call it Arrowhead, but we wanted to make sure there were enough elements in the design that reminds every fan who has attended a game at Arrowhead about what a great stadium that is,” Hunt said in an interview with Fox 4 on Thursday. “We really want to honor the legacy of Arrowhead, and we know how important Arrowhead is to our fans.”Maintaining a similar design architectually allows the Chiefs to hone in and keep what they have come to be known for – having the largest outdoor stadium in the world. Looking ahead to the futureThe new stadium has been designed by MANICA, who are also working on the Tennessee Titans‘ new Nissan Stadium in Nashville, slated to open in 2027, and were also the responsible for the design and construction of Allegiant Stadium, home to the Las Vegas Raiders.The Chiefs’ new home is expected to have the capacity to house 70,000 fans, with a fully enclosed, and translucent, roof with ETFE panels.
