People around the world are being invited to stand in remembrance of Daphne Caruana Galizia this Sunday, 13th September, as part of an International Day of Remembrance calling for truth, justice and accountability. The initiative is encouraging Maltese communities and supporters across the globe to come together in honour of the assassinated journalist and the values she stood for, including independent journalism, freedom of expression, transparency and democracy.“Wherever you are in the world, you are invited to join in remembrance of Daphne Caruana Galizia and in support of truth, justice, accountability, and the vital role of independent and international investigative journalism in defending democracy,” organisers said.People are being encouraged to hold peaceful vigils in their cities, towns or homes, share photos and messages calling for justice, and speak out in support of independent journalism. Those living abroad are also being invited to gather peacefully outside their local Maltese embassy or consulate at 10am local time.A gathering has already been announced in London, where people will meet outside Malta House in Piccadilly at 10am, with attendees encouraged to bring candles, placards and messages of support. Those unable to attend a physical gathering are being urged to participate online by sharing photos, videos and messages across social media.“Though separated by oceans and continents, we stand together in remembrance and solidarity,” the appeal reads. The initiative comes days after Yorgen Fenech was acquitted of complicity in the murder of Caruana Galizia and conspiracy to murder her, with the jury returning an 8-1 not guilty verdict on both charges.“Wherever you are. However you can. On 13 September, stand for Daphne. Stand for justice. Stand for truth. Stand for independent journalism.”•
