The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has condemned an incident during Joseph Muscat’s press conference on Wednesday, after an individual who was not a member of the media was spotted zooming in on a journalist’s laptop and taking photographs.According to the IĠM, this is not the first time an incident of this nature has happened. The institute said it does not know why the individual was photographing the journalist’s laptop or what they intended to do with the images.“We do not know whether this individual intends to publish the photos, wants to intimidate journalists, or wants to gather information on potential sources,” the IĠM said.“Either way, this is not on.”The institute raised particular concern over the potential exposure of journalists’ sources and information, warning against any attempt to obtain such material through illicit means.“Trying to intimidate journalists or using illicit means to acquire information about sources is an attack on the media and an attack on freedom of speech,” it said. The IĠM has now formally condemned any such behaviour and warned that it is prepared to take action should it continue. The incident occurred during Wednesday’s press conference held by former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, where journalists had gathered to question him following his public address. What do you make of this?•
