StoneX Group will replace the City Index name in the UK with StoneX Trading, StoneX announced today (Wednesday). Existing clients will keep their accounts, platforms and support arrangements.City Index branding will retire on September 12. For traders, the immediate effect is a new name and website, not an account migration. StoneX is putting its UK retail offer under the parent company's identity after six years of ownership. The renaming continues a longer integration. FinanceMagnates.com reported in 2021 that StoneX was winding down the GAIN Capital UK entity and moving the retail operation into its wider group structure.A New Name, Same AccountsThe StoneX Trading website is live. New UK account openings are moving to the new name, which is also replacing City Index across mobile apps and client communications.StoneX said there will be no change to existing trading platforms, accounts or support teams during the transition. StoneX Trading remains a trading name of StoneX Financial Ltd, which the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulates under reference number 446717.The UK website advertises spread betting, contracts for difference (CFDs) and foreign exchange trading across more than 13,500 markets. It lists Web Trader, TradingView, MetaTrader 4 and mobile apps among the available interfaces.StoneX also said the new identity will give retail traders access to research and market intelligence previously available to institutional clients. It did not identify a new product, entitlement, price or release date tied to that statement.Giles Watts, StoneX's EMEA regional business director for self-directed trading, said "the real change is in the brand behind the experience."[#highlighted-links#]Rebrand Arrives After Revenue DeclineThe switch follows a weaker quarter for the segment that includes StoneX's retail FX and CFD operations. StoneX's latest quarterly filing put Self-Directed/Retail operating revenue at $96.3 million for the three months ended June 30, down 13% from a year earlier.Revenue from FX and CFD contracts fell 19% to $64.7 million. Average daily volume dropped 27% to $6.805 billion, while revenue per million rose 11% from a year earlier to $147.StoneX did not connect those results to the brand change. The filing attributed the FX and CFD revenue decline primarily to lower trading volume. The figures reverse the direction seen in earlier results. FinanceMagnates.com reported in 2024 that retail FX and CFD revenue had risen 38% even as volume declined 24% in that quarter.Alastair Hine, StoneX's global head of self-directed trading, called the new name "our ambition for the future of self-directed trading." The release did not set investment targets for products or technology.A Brand Retirement Seven Years in the MakingCity Index dates to 1983 and became part of GAIN Capital in 2015. The acquisition pushed GAIN's client funds above $1 billion, its then-chief executive told FinanceMagnates.com at the time.GAIN later considered retiring the name itself. In 2019, FinanceMagnates.com reported a plan to phase out City Index and build a professional retail offer around the GAIN Capital identity, also without changing existing customer accounts.Broker rebrands have continued elsewhere. Kudotrade adopted the Kudo.com name in February 2026, while entities that had operated under Octa launched Elev8 after leaving a brand-sharing arrangement.Other firms have shortened established names. Blueberry dropped "Markets" in 2024, and FinanceMagnates.com reported in March that IC Markets, KCM Trade and Admirals had made similar changes.GAIN did not complete its proposed City Index phase-out before StoneX acquired it for $236 million in 2020. That earlier plan would have used GAIN Capital as the retail name. This article was written by Damian Chmiel at www.financemagnates.com.
