Reigning champion 3-year-old filly Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) put in a solo breeze Saturday morning at Belmont Park ahead of a projected next start in the GII Beldame Stakes Sept. 25.Taking to the track around 8:30 a.m., Nitrogen worked four furlongs in :49 3/5 for trainer Mark Casse.“I thought she went really good, and they said she broke off nice, I watched the work [on video]–she went easy in the middle, and then finished and galloped out good,” Casse said. “We weren't looking for anything fancy. She got over it [well] and they said she had great energy when she got back to the barn, which is always what we are wanting.”It was Nitrogen's first work over the Belmont Park surface since shipping down from Saratoga ahead of her Beldame target, which Casse opted for versus another start against males in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup.“We discussed all the different scenarios, and as much as the Jockey Club intrigues us, we started out the year with a goal, and that goal was to win the Breeders' Cup,” Casse said. “We feel like our best path to that is the Beldame.”Also on track Saturday was Japan's Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) who had a light day and is set to work Tuesday over the main track ahead of the Jockey Club Gold Cup.“We went to [Tapeta] first to trot and easy hacking and then we went to the main track for a normal canter one lap,” said assistant trainer Yuki Araki. “I think he's in very good condition now. Always, when he moves to America, he gets condition better and better and I find this morning he moved really well. I'm very happy and I think he's very happy, too.”Since arriving in the states and clearing quarantine earlier last week, Forever Young has made several visits to the track, with racing manager Hiroshi Ando saying, “Main thing is Forever Young has settled in very well. He's calm now, relaxing. Whenever we want to take him out, it's easy now. Very professional.”Last year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner is set to go four-five furlongs Tuesday, with Ando noting that the feeling of the work would be more important than the stopwatch.“It should be a half-mile to five-eighths, but you guys will be disappointed clock wise,” Ando said, with a laugh. “We won't give you a fancy time. We want to just feel the horse.” After greatly enjoying the new @BelmontPark1905's Tapeta track, Forever Young seemed to have completely settled into his new surroundings.
