Repubblika has hit back at a statement issued by Yorgen Fenech’s defence team, saying it “will not be intimidated by threats of legal action”.The NGO said it respects the jury’s verdict and the constitutional role of the courts, but argued that an acquittal does not erase the evidence heard during the trial.“A verdict of acquittal does not erase the evidence heard in court, nor does it oblige citizens to forget what Yorgen Fenech himself said,” Repubblika said, referring to recordings of his police interrogation and his testimony under oath.The statement comes after Fenech’s defence team warned that it reserves the right to take legal action over what it described as “lies and baseless allegations” following last week’s 8-1 acquittal.Repubblika said Fenech’s lawyers have every right to defend their client, but added that they “have no right to expect us to be afraid and remain silent”.The group also said those demanding truth and accountability following Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination have faced insults, threats and legal action over the years.“We are not alone,” Repubblika said.It also confirmed that a gathering will take place in Valletta on Wednesday, 16th September at 7pm, in solidarity with Caruana Galizia’s family, journalists and those calling for truth, justice and accountability.“Anyone who thinks they can frighten this movement into silence with threats can come and see for themselves on Wednesday,” the statement concluded.•
