(Ret.) Rob Maness, a former bomber squadron commander who served the U.S. military for more than 30 years. Although he expressed that it troubled him to admit it, he stated, “I believe that the individuals and the government within the United States National Security and Intelligence framework are nearly in the same position we were on September 10, 2001.”Here are some examples from across the country that reflect his concern, one of which is New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who faced significant scrutiny during his 2025 campaign for meeting with and posing for a photo alongside Imam Siraj Wahhaj, a religious figure identified as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. In contrast, canon law exclusively governs the internal organization and operations of the Catholic Church, covering regulations regarding clergy, sacraments, and other ecclesiastical and administrative standards.Unlike sharia, which can apply to both Muslims and non-Muslims, canon law does not serve as a civil or political legal framework for the state or individuals outside the Catholic Church. One clearly poses a significantly greater existential threat to the nation’s governance than the other.With a growing Muslim population, only weeks ago, Texas Republicans began promoting “Don’t Sharia Our Texas” as a key focus, describing political Islam as an “incompatible, seditious, subversive, competing enemy system.”The sentiment is echoed beyond Texas, as evidence by a Muslim in Mississippi who has attracted attention in a small town of approximately 365 residents due to concerns about the potential implementation of Sharia law.
