Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) will make her next start in the GII Beldame Stakes on Sept. 25 at the new Belmont Park, reports Jon Green, the general manager of D.J. Stable. The Nitrogen team, which includes trainer Mark Casse and Jon and Len Green, had planned on running in Saturday's GII Fasig-Tipton Locust Grove Stakes at Churchill Downs. However, Casse was concerned about a heat wave in Kentucky and was wary of shipping to Churchill and training the Eclipse-Award-winning filly under those conditions. Instead, Nitrogen was shipped from Saratoga to Belmont to train under what were likely to be more mild temperatures. Once that decision was made, Casse started to shop for a new spot and said that the races under consideration were the Beldame, the GI Spinster Stakes and a tilt against males in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup.“Our end game with Nitrogen is for her to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff,” Jon Green said. “Keeping that end game in mind, we have decided to run her in the Beldame. Jose Ortiz has committed to riding her and we're excited about a two-race series against horses in her own division.”Green said that Nitrogen will have a breeze this weekend.“We needed to make this decision before breezing her to insure that we had the proper amount of time to prepare for the Beldame,” he said. “She will breeze on the main track at Belmont.”Nitrogen will return to her own division after finishing second behind males in the GI Whitney Stakes, where she was beaten by Sovereignty (Into Mischief). Though she was defeated, the filly was widely praised for running so well when up against males and the 2025 Horse of the Year. The post Nitrogen Will Go Next In The Beldame appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
